So, like, a reference to a game inside of a game.

Here's a great example (and probably my favorite one)

The Epic Battle Fantasy series has a lot of references to many things, but my favorite simply due to how random the reference is gotta be this line from Lance during the Glitch fight.

01101101 01101111 01101110 01101001 01101011 01100001 00100000 01100100 01101001 01100100 00100000 01110100 01101000 01101001 01110011 00101110

Yes, THIS is a reference. When translated, it becomes.

Monika did this.

Fucker throws in random binary during a secret boss fight to make a DDLC reference. Even then, the Glitch also goes between two sprites saying I AM ERROR (Zelda 2) and ERR MISSINGNO (Pokémon)

sorry i'm here, i'm busy doing absolutely nothing at all...

Funnily enough I just watched this video. Stardew Valley has some cool references here and there

The OG Link's Awakening was FULL of Nintendo game references.

Including, Kirby, Princess Peach, Chain Chomp, Goombas, Piranha plants, shyguys, Yoshi, Wart (the boss from SMB 2), etc.

Pretty much the entirety of "Astérix et Obélix XXL2". With references ranging from roman enemies resembling certain video game characters such as Mario equipped with F.L.U.D.D., Sonic, Pac-Man, Lara Croft, Ryu and Rayman to background elements. Some of my favorites include a sphynx with the head of Olimar from Pikmin and tiles featuring the cat and the mices from ChuChu Rocket.

I think this is one of the silliest references. Pretty much ex lawyer former private eye doing "OBJECTION!"

I know that one! I've heard it loses steam on the references in the second half, but having actual Sonic, Pac-Man, Ryu, Mario and Rayman (somehow) legionnaires coming at you, in places where Clank is used as a clock pendulum, Maximo's sword and shield are environmental decoration, Getafix/Panoramix walks around with a suitcase like G-Man, there are mobile bombs with Bomberman's face that blow up Tetris block doors, there's a Roman spy with Sam Fischer night goggles etc. it's a very wild and wacky piece.

The game Cookie Cutter is F U L L of them. Various posters of artists and bands like The Prodigy, a broken monitor showing a Hollow Knight-like creature in the exact pose as promotional material of HK, the Buster Sword jutting out from a pile of junk in a soul-powered android factory, the fat onion knight's armor from Dark Souls hidden in some crystal mines, Barry the Chopper's mask/helmet hanging on the wall in the office of the dystopian police force's boss (who is inspired by Marilyn Manson and the crazy scientist from Maniac Mansion alike), the face of Raz from Psychonauts graffiti'd on the wall, a merchant character named Stonic with a lot of gold ring piercings who has to take it slooow...

It's a game that's kind of like Newgrounds. Wild, almost lawless, not for everyone, but a load of color, personality and creativity in an interesting world that has monsters, magic, robots, mutants, space whales, Hindu demons, love, hate, chainsaws, gore, friendship and penis jokes alike.

Fun gameplay too.

Deus ex games exist within Deus ex universe and Assassins creed and Far Cry games exist in Assassins Creed universe. Also Deus Ex: Mankind Divided has a Weighted Companion Cube from Portal games in one of store the basements. same antiques shop. Thief game exists within Deus Ex franchise as well and has even Thief miniature figure in game.

Deathloop has environmental links that they might share universe with dishonored.

Fallout references to Skyrim in 2 separate occasions. The Nirnroot and a dwemer 'asset' found in world. the last might be Bethesda's small asset flip error or maybe not.Skyrim's nirnroot is intentional though.

Fallout 4 also has actual minigames you can play using Pipboy and are based on old real and existing games. :)

You can play as MK characters in NBA Jam TE, there's also some ads for it in the background during gameplay.

Data East liked putting Karnov in their other games, since he was kinda like their mascot at the time. Bad Dudes, Trio The Punch, Fighter's History, etc.

The Simpsons Game on the Xbox 360 was filled with game references and parodies.

Medal of Honor, GTA, Legend of Zelda, and Pokémon all get themed levels in the game.

I remember the last level was a Dance Dance Revolution challenge, set to Like A Hurricane by the Scorpions.

Really? I never saw that picture in the OG Link's Awakening. Where did you find that? Not the bottom image, I remember that, the top one. Also, I think I remembered some of those reference, but not all.

My favorite is from Later Alligator, where they have a character clearly modeled after Goro Majima from the Yakuza series, making multiple references, themselves within a separate reference where the presentation changes to mimic a dating sim.

Its part of the trading sequence. You will see it after you deliver a letter from the woman in the animal village to Dr. Write. I believe it is in the remake as well.

3D Realms games often had secret easter eggs you could find that referenced games as well as pop culture icons.

Shadow Warrior Classic (PC/DoS) depicted Lara Croft from the Tomb Raider series:

Duke Nukem 3D (PC/DoS) did a similar thing with Doomguy from DOOM

The "Choozo" Statue from Guacamelee.

iu_1191605_2366038.png

My only criticism is that I think they should've called a Chorizo Statue.
