You know that one game that always tries to be very deep and depressing and cool all that isms you can add.

One example: the character "Not important" from Hatred.

Morimiya Middle School Shooting

tries too hard to be edgy and is blocked by many because he acts rude towards others to feel better about himself.

Undertale.

If you're a Newgrounds OG who appreciates Flash games with depth, check out the game I made in 2024.

That game where you try and recreate the Kennedy assassination. It's sincere and tastefully presented, but I don't think you can get any edgier than making a presidential assassination simulator.

I generally like to quantify edgy games on what they present and themes involved. Games like Hatred, the Postal series and Twisted Metal Black are legitimately edgy, even if there is a small vein of black humor amongst the grimdark. They are less known for their gameplay, then simply being generally nihilistic for the sake of it. (At least with Postal, it's technically an option)

Games that have edgy material, but don't fully fit would be games like Jak 2, the first couple of SMT games (where the plot takes a metaphorical greasy shit on Abrahamic religions) Persona 3 and the Prototype games. They usually have better writing and gameplay than the above titles, but tends to lay the cynicism and edginess juxtaposed on the more silly and absurd parts.

Just stop worrying, and love the bomb.

That's one I always forget was seen as edgy in 2001. They actually had to cut a scene from the game where psycho preacher Jebidiah drowns a baby during a baptism. When Jeb appeared in the Peacock TV adaptation I was really hoping they'd have the balls to make it happen, but I guess drowning a child is fucked up even for the desensitized normies of the 2020s

Chiller, an arcade game from 1986.

People haven't changed much over time. Growing up I remember everyone playing The Torture Game in IT class, to the teacher's shock.

ALL OF YOU ARE AMATUERS

This is the edgiest game

If your game isn't cocking an SMG. Then it isn't edgy enough.

In fairness, it was pretty tasteless then and I would've imagined that it wouldn't have flown with Peacock, especially with the Twisted Metal series outside of Black was tongue in cheek humor mixed in with the carnage. Probably for the best all things considered, and maybe it'll be more serious if they make season 2.

Just stop worrying, and love the bomb.

I think metal gear rising: revengeance.

Hideo Kojima didn’t blush at all making international politics front and center. He actually glorified private military companies (aka mercenaries) and it had a ton of blood and limbs.

What’s more, the final boss was basically the ultimate lawful evil antagonist and Raiden was purely chaotic good. The devs actually made you sympathize with and even root for Armstrong, despite his beliefs being basically brutal survival of the fittest.

But what does Raiden do? Just becomes a psycho and rips his heart out while still acknowledging they are both parallel characters.

Another edgy game might be New Vegas because it gives literal slavery and genocide a fair shake at defending itself.

Most other stories and media just say “bad guy iz bad!1” without elaborating why. Plus New Vegas had multiple factions of differing asshole-levels, and it really made the choice of “fuck them all and kill them all” seem the best option.

It’s funny how just presenting “evil” characters as human is considered controversial.

Do edgy game titles count like R&C: Up Your Arsenal or Going Commando or tag lines like Antonball: it's time to play with your balls

I was a pre-teen when it was new; was it not seen as that by some?

I had to recall it in an edit just because it hits so many tropes I forgot I experienced most of them first in that game.

Drake of the 99 dragons is a classic example of a piece of media that is so "dark and edgy" that it becomes comical.

Seriously, Shadow the hedgehog has nothing on this game!

Even if Twisted Metal Black is the most edgy title of the whole series I'm actually going to go out on a limb and say that the original first two actually fit the bill of being edgy enough... Even if it was T rated.

AS FOR OTHER GAMES

We can't forget that Doom and Mortal Kombat were pretty damn edgy for their time and pretty much brought that whole aesthetic into gaming to begin with. I'm surprised no one brought those two up yet especially since the former's sequel was rumored to have a Columbine Mod made by Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold.

fun metal gear rising fun fact, hideo kojima had no creative involvement in making that game, which is why its actually good. he doesnt even consider it "canon" to mgs if that means anything to you

I have a question. Someone doesn't remember a flash player game that had a character with a blue jacket, red shirt, he used two guns and a sword and he was in a kind of hell. He had to save his wife and he had different bosses. I remember one that was a woman with body of a giant crab and another one that was a mechanical dinosaur, someone should remember it, I think it was called legend of jack but I look for it and I can't even get any images

When I first read the title I was going to name something like Leisure Suit Larry or any of the Postal games, but ones that actually try to have a serious tone without a hint of irony? I'm split between two.

The Darkness: The protagonist, Jackie Estacado, feels like a self-insert. He looks like a mixture of Not Important from Hatred and Mitchell Shephard from Hunt Down the Freeman and storywise, he's essentially Spawn, if he was a scrawny, school shooter-looking Italian dude. His personality is basically just the standard antihero: Silent, brooding, scarred, cynical, yet violent and sadistic... but only if you wrong him and he totally has a code of honor, despite his whole background being that he's a hitman for the mafia, who adopted him after he lost his family at a young age. Because of his oh-so harsh life, he is uncaring and emotionless, except when he's with his equally criminal friends and family, whom he blindly trusts and cherishes... until they inevitably betray him, causing the protag to unleash an ever-so righteous wave of fury. But how does he go up against, you know, a whole crime syndicate and their corrupt police buddies? Turns out, he just so happens to have an ancient demonic being possess him on his 21st birthday, as was apparently normal for his bloodline. Said entity for some reason allows him to have total control over its dark superevil powers and rampage through the mortal realm with reckless abandon.

The plot honestly sounds like it was written as a parody of edgy teenage fanfics that twists and turns at every corner into inexplicable tangents that are somehow still made relevant to the story. After his loving childhood friend girlfriend is killed by the mob, he unalives himself in despair, only to land in Hell where he fights his way through WW1 trenches for some reason. He of course gets revived through satanic black magic or something, and kills all the mobsters and corrupt cops with absolutely no collateral deaths, not that we hear of at least. And then the protagonist decides to wage war against the demon that possessed him in hell, somehow wins and rather than breaking the curse, as was his goal for the whole thing, he is instead allowed to see his dead girlfriend one last time. No magic demonic resurrection for her I guess.

Funnily enough, the story is my only issue with the game, because otherwise, as far as my 5-6 year old self remembers, the gameplay and animation was actually pretty great.

Rogue Warrior: As befitting of a game with shitty controls, graphics and physics with Bethesda patented glitches, which to top it all off, was actually just poorly made propaganda for the military industrial complex, the protagonist is one of the cringiest attempts at making a one-liner producing special forces badass character. His name? Richard "Demo Dick" Marcinko. I thought for the longest time that the devs just came up with the most porn star sounding name imaginable for the hell of it, but no, Demo Dick was a real guy, though obviously the game is completely disconnected from reality. Demo Dick is dropped down to North Korea and single-handely massacres his way through waves of soldiers to prevent them from using their weapons of mass destruction, despite his superiors warning him that this might cause World War 3 with the Soviets. But Demo Dick doesn't care if he causes a mass extinction event, so off he goes slaughtering his way from North Korea all the way to the USSR, destroys all their missiles and escapes through a conveniently placed boat full of Navy Seals, just chilling by the enemy coastline during the Cold War. The best part of the game is the credits and I wholeheartedly mean that.

Have I truly become a monster?

Would the OG Gears of War count? Or would that just be violent? Either way, I'd go with quake outside of 3. "Oh, here's a cult that leads to a final boos with a meme name! Now we have this plot with a bunch of horrifying alien cyborgs where the borg is slammed on! Now you're the strogg!"
