Kool Scullz
Last week, I studied the anatomy of the head.
I aimed to finish the skeletal features by the end of the week, so I can then move on to the other features like the muscles and the constructs and how the expressions work and so and so.
Well, next week rolled on, and I hadn't yet made a start on the muscular features.
But what I got out of it is very useful! How the bones fit together like a puzzle piece, how the nasal passage is usually about as high as one of the eye-sockets, and how some of the bones create the features.
for example, the zygomatic bone create the extneded features of the cheeks
I turned to Youtube tutorials for my studies, as I couldn't afford to go to an art session. This was a bit tricky, since they all have their own methods to draw skulls. But I wasn't looking for any method, just a way to learn the ins and outs of a skull.
As a result, that helped me understand the basic features of the face. Although, at first I blindly followed the first tutorial I saw.
It wasn't bad by all means, escpecially with the side view, but I found it to be a bit wider than usual. Looking back at it, I hadn't yet understand how the bones make up the skull.
But, I'm proud of this one - if I say so myself.
Looking at Jazza's tutorial helped me understand how some of the cavities and bones help shape the head.
I assessed myself on drawing the skull front and side without looking at the tutorial (but surprise surprise I did) and saw that skull was a bit wider than usaul.
Following that, i studied the composition of the bones, using an extremely helpful online model for reference. It's a bit clunky but it shows enough info for me to understand.
Onto the side view, I pushed myself further by imagining how the head fits over the skull. As well as a few things that can help me.
Going blindly without references (other than me and my brother), I drew some faces attempting to follow some guidlines i made up in my head, whilst also assessing my own handiwork.
This improved my drawing skills by a huge amount, but this is only the beginning so I have a lot ahead at the moment.
I think getting a real-life example of a head for reference will helpful, it's a shame since it's a hassle to get one, especially if you're skint on money...
