2000s Nostalgia

Hey guys, this is something I've been thinking about for a while. I've been listening to Anamanaguchi for a while (never listened to them) and I suddenly felt incredibly nostalgic.

Okay, hear me out.

It's something weird, I can't think of WHAT it is. I used to play Super Smash Bros Melee religiously and, revisiting it, it's... another time. THIS is how they revealed that motherfucker. Dark room, small stage, crappy projector.

Really, holy shit has stuff changed. One of THE biggest flash games from 2006 onwards was the wonderfully garbage Super Smash Flash, featuring every damn sprite they could get a hold of, including some crap remix sonic fancharacter with a sword.

So back to Anamanaguchi, THIS remix reminded me of all that.

Back on the ye olde internet it was entirely different culture. Your angst was on Livejournal (never used it) and there were literal hordes of furries (they all found a permanent home of Furaffinity, I think) and literally every site looked like some variation of crap.

As far as Newgrounds goes, THIS was 100% true.

And let's not forget Thing Thing and Madness Interactive, back on ye olde Newgrounds we had the 'categorized' games that were incredibly hard to get on. Seriously. That list was BARELY changed.

Again, holy shit has stuff changed.

I also recently re-watched ye olde G4 show with Jeff Gerstmann, Greg Kasavin, before the first was fired and the second left. And it was just... Weird.

On G4 and TV back then, the PS2 era was wonderful bullshit. This was back when MTV did Cribs, and each guy would have his own "Yea I got my game room right here running motherfucking Midnight Club, ye" and like everything, G4 included which overlapped like hell with MTV, was done in Los Angeles or the long lost land of Japan, not San Francisco, Austin, Boston, or whatever's trendy these days. G4, back in ye olde days, would fill empty time with Cinametch. Trust me when I said it was ALWAYS Video Games, including shitty Japanese shovelware that doesn't even exist anymore.

I dunno. I'm nostalgic for the good old GameCube, PS2, the old Newgrounds culture, Japan, E3 being a big deal, Katamari Fucking Damaci, the shitty fan games, EVERYTHING.

:(

Anyone else know what I'm talking about?

Good old times when sprite animations were still a thing.

Also waking up early on a Saturday morning to watch Fox Kids and Nickelodeon.

I have a shit load of tapes with 4kids crap recorded. A lot of the tapes have really bad audio and video degradation. For some reason I actually liked Sonic X back then.

I was like 3 years old in 2000, but I grew up with a lot of old games and stuff. My grandparents had a snes, and at home I had an n64, gamecube, ps1, ps2, and xbox, so I get really nostalgic about that era of gaming/my childhood.

Anamanaguchi is a pretty cool band. Really like the score for Scott Pilgrim: The Game. (Ey @jrob there's a k-on poster in one of their music videos at 0:10)

I miss watching Avatar: The Last Airbender on Nickelodeon. It was one of my favorite Nickelodeon shows back when I was 8.

At least you still have Korra and you can watch the first series of Avatar online.

Eventually, people'll start saying that the 2000's was the best time to be a kid.

Perhaps around the 2020's-2030's

The 2000s is becoming the new 90s now, I guess. I still remember Runescape, San Andreas, and when Nickelodeon had that splat as their logo. I also remember when Drake & Josh was still airing..

How will I know that we develop nostalgia for the '00s? We remember things like G4, nu-metal, the heyday of the Iraq War, and Dubya Bush in a rose-tinted light that makes it sound better than it really is. To be fair, every generation does this and once all the dust settles and hate dies off, we start to remember that it wasn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be, but it doesn't mean that it wasn't as good either.

One thing I will say though, the channel formerly known as Sci-fi channel had Ani-Monday, which was fucking awesome, until they started to air motion comics and that's when it started going down the tubes.

Just stop worrying, and love the bomb.

Ah, yes, soon it will be our turn to start shit talking to kids about how are childhood rocked and there's sucks balls in comparison.

Sure the 90's had some outstanding Cartoons and the best Disney movies to date, but WE have Pixar, and we also have early 2000-2005 CN and Disney, which was still very epic stuff containing some very awesome toons such as EEnE, Invader Zim, Avatar: TLAB, Kim Possible, Courage, Kids Next Door and Grim Adventures. Let's not even mention that we have every single Meme, Internet joke, and Youtube. 90's Internet was basically just garbage in comparison. I wouldn't exactly say that this era of ours ended in a full decade, since 2010 is too recent, but I'd say around 07-08 is a good stopping point. Usually most generations don't consider the transition years as being part of that decade.

But anyways, ya know its getting harder and harder to tell Generations apart, sure there are some things about the 90's that make it much different from our current gen, but not nearly as jarring a difference as from the 80's to the 90's, and 70's, 60's, 50's, etc. It seems like everything pre-50's can be grouped together, and everything post 80's can be grouped together where as the decades between them are very very distinct. Which kinda sucks because you can't really dress like a "90's guy" and expect people to get what you're suppose to be. You'd just look like a normal guy even with the most distinctive 90's clothes. It reminds me of that episode of South Park where the guy gets unfrozen from 1994 in 1997, and they all treat him like a cave man despite the fact he doesn't look very different at all.

3 of the them released pre-2000, every thing else Monsters, Inc. and up isn't. Would you really consider Pixar more indicative of the 90's than the 00's? Exactly.

such as EEnE, Invader Zim, Avatar: TLAB, Kim Possible, Courage, Kids Next Door and Grim Adventures.
Ed, Edd, n Eddy first aired in January 4, 1999. Courage the Cowardly Dog first aired November 12, 1999.

Splitting some very small hairs right there. Once again, the transition years out of a decade aren't very indicative of the times, not at all, really. So yeah, both those are very much properties of the "00's"

Look at this picture. It screams 90's. I have pictures of me from 1994-1999 where I dressed just like this. As soon as 2000 rolled around I wore future clothes.

No one I ever saw from my (very) early childhood (late 90's) or even pictures of back then in the early 90's, had any one wearing that garbage. If I recall, a few tv shows and some movies, mostly starring kids, showed people wearing stuff like that. But I can't find nor recall any pictures or actual video of people in real life wearing stuff like that.

Yes, because it symbolized a turning point in cinema. Halfway through the 90's there was this movie produced entirely out of computer generated graphics, and that's reverberated to today.

I'd say Toy Story, in particular, is what should be accredited that, but all of Pixar's greats after that, could very solidly be found in the 2000's, which is why I consider them a property of the 00's. Monster's Inc, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, and Wall-E (Maaaaaybe Up) certainly are. But no doubt that Toy Story was its intro onto the big screen and its importance to the CGI of today is undoubted.

Well, it was a bit before your time.

True enough, I barely remember the late 90's.

I remember getting the same Sonic X DVD from everyone at my birthday party from 1st and 2nd grade.

Good old times when the whole class was a family to you and you could invite everyone to your bday party.

I couldn't agree more! I liked the internet when not everyone used it. I felt so cool and niche, and like I knew so much more than my friends cause of it.

Also, don't start me with G4. It was ahead of it's time dammit. Had it sustained during it's 2008 lull to about 2013, the channel would have made it dammit! I would kill for an x play clone for modern day consoles!

The early 2000s was a time when I had no real access to the internet.

That's why I spent my time playing games on the SNES, and the sega genesis.
