In a hypothetical situation, both nations can easily destroy each other either with nuclear weapons, or even in a conventional war, more so Russia than the U.S.
The reality is that neither America or Russia will ever fight with each other purely for the purposes of mutual assured destruction (MAD) and Ukraine and Syria aren't worth fighting over in the big picture. The Cold War has been over nearly 25 years ago, and yet it seems like Russia doesn't want give up the fight, or are convinced that they're in the 1980's, and with a former KGB agent as President, (Putin) you never really know what's truly going on.
Just stop worrying, and love the bomb.
