another Megaman game Canceled 2013-04-09 20:23:31

In 2010, Capcom tapped the talent behind Metroid Prime to bring Mega Man into the modern age - only to have the game suffer the fate of similar recent attempts to find a new audience for the 8-bit hero.

Codenamed Maverick Hunter, the first-person shooter had the blessing of Mega Man's creator and a talented team tasked with attracting a new generation of fans. But the departure of Keiji Inafune likely killed the most interesting take on the 25-year-old character to date.

Mega Man's foray into the first-person shooter genre looked, at least on paper, like a formula for success. One of a handful of collaborations with Western developers kicked off by Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune, the Mega Man first-person shooter was in development at Austin-based Armature Studio, the promising developer founded by Metroid Prime's creators. The new Mega Man would have been redesigned by the concept artist responsible for adapting Iron Man's armor for Marvel's successful film franchise. Thematically, the game would have built upon the mythology of Mega Man X, a series that was a darker, more mature spin-off of the cuter, classic Mega Man franchise.

The game would have stayed true to core Mega Man X gameplay concepts, re-imagining his X-Buster arm cannon, his dash and his ability to appropriate the special powers of his fallen enemies. Platforming elements, including X's wall jump, and classic Mega Man X characters would have been re-imagined in new ways.

Unfortunately, Armature's Mega Man first-person shooter, Maverick Hunter shared the fate of the Blue Bomber's other recent projects - Mega Man Legends 3, Mega Man Universe, Mega Man Online - and was canceled before the public ever had the opportunity to see it.

According to a number of Capcom sources, Armature's Maverick Hunter was prototyped and playable. It had a short lifespan, only about six months in the first half of 2010. It showed promise, sources said, but was deemed a significant gamble, and quietly killed before Inafune publicly exited Capcom in late 2010.

Wow! Capcom really has it out for the Blue Bomber.

It's a shame that it was cancelled, but it's not really a surprise. Capcom is better off pulling the plug on this franchise than teasing the fans with new Mega Man games that won't see the light of day, especially since Inafune left a couple of years ago.

Not to mention trying to turn it into a FPS game simply doesn't sound right, and pretty much proves how desperate Capcom is when it comes to reviving a morbid franchise that has seen better days.

I really hate it when a game company has the same idea you did for a reboot but years later.

I MEAN SERIOUSLY IT HURTS.

Capcom must hate Megaman or something. It seems they just keep cancelling his games.

They're doing it to spite Inafune.

I don't really know what to say about that. I am not that big of a fan of Megaman, so I hadn't even heard that there was a game in the works. I can't really feel upset about it since I haven't been thinking about it at all. Although that did sound like a pretty kickass idea, it seems that a lot of game developers just want to go with something that is safe and marketable.

A first person Mega Man shooter, if nothing else, will pretty much invite hate from FPS haters who will be quick to bash this game as a Call of Duty ripoff, {how original} and old school MM fans who would probably be upset that they lose a lot of platforming aspects of the game. When an iconic game franchise like Mega Man tries to go in a totally different genre, 9 times out of ten, it doesn't end well.

It feels like I've been repeating thousands of times over, game developers are a business first, and like any good business, they know what works, what doesn't and who are their key demographic. Why do people here can't seem to grasp that concept?

That looks awful. It reminds me of the recent "hardcore" Bomberman. Metroid Prime works as a serious FPS title because it was already a serious game series. I can't take a character named "MegaMan" seriously, and I'm sure Japanese gamers would have an even harder time considering he goes by "RockMan" there.

The game wasn't helped by its incredibly generic look. I thought someone was playing a Half-Life 2 clone at first. If this game was greenlit by its creator, I can only assume that he no longer cares for the series, or that the game was pitched in a much different manner.

Mega Man just really isn't that popular to Capcom. They kind of shot themselves in that aspect. I hate how a lot of articles just reference his NES games though. Last time I checked, the Blue Bomber kicked a lot of ass on the Super Nintendo. Mega Man 9 was a throwback to the NES days. Mega Man 10 was just a re-hash of Mega Man 9 and didn't live up to what it could have been. Fans didn't like it, and to be honest I think they're rose-tinted glasses were showing.

So yeah, Mega Man is in limbo right now. Which I don't get why. His 25th Anniversary, that has the potential to be milked like crazy, and you know Capcom, they love to give their series a good milking.

to be honest, the FPS didn't look that good anyways.
i think i'd rather they released a top-notch game than a half-assed fps, which is what that looked like to me.

So, Capcom is acting all butthurt just because he left?
