What makes a good story? 2013-01-21 19:25:22

I want to know what makes a book, or fan fic, or webcomic interesting to you. Post examples, highlight positives, provide reasons for why that story entertained you. I like Star Wars because it covers the happenings of a (past?) world over many different eras. I like Lord of the Rings, I like The Odyssey, etc etc.

What story would be your #1 favorite and why?

The work, which becomes a new genre itself, will be called...

It takes many things working together, most importantly is the characters and the world etc. which all help to make the story seem so real and allows you to get drawn into the world and to feel for the characters. You might have a great idea for a story but without the characters or the development of the world around them and the relationships between them etc. it will just come off as bland and uninteresting.

What story would be your #1 favorite and why?

Impossible to say, many share the spotlight.

A good story is paper, writing utensil, and an imagination.

and paragraphs, and a general understanding of structure.

Sadly I have seen quite a lot of stories which don't use paragraphs and don't start a fresh paragraph / line for each character's words, which ends up causing confusion and makes it less enjoyable or convenient to read. However I do heavily doubt this is a problem in any actual published books...mainly because I don't see any company publishing such things.

I'm currently reading this. Its a Sherlock/Watson fanfiction based on the Sherlock series characters and setting. It is fast becoming my favourite simply for the way the writer is able to get into Sherlocks head so beautifully. The plot doesn't have to be perfect for me in fics. The characters just have to be spot on.

I hope they ejaculate a lot. As Sherlock Holmes and Watson always loved ejaculating.

I know ejaculate meant to divulge ideas etc. but come on, it's amusing.

Haha. 21st century Watson wouldn't get away with writing blogs about him and Sherlock 'ejaculating' all over London.

And they haven't yet. Slow burn fic. Love a slow burn.

Flesh that shit out. I want to be engrossed in the world and the characters to the point where I know their behaviour for any situation they're in. When I read the story, I get sucked into it and want more while completely disregarding the real world.

This is my signature. It is a nice signature.

It depends on how you see yourself and your life I think. Most people feel that they themselves lead boring lives and wish that they could be something more, something better and exciting. To that effect an author will try to write a character with a story that seems to relate to the reader but is much more exciting in a believable way. A good example of this is in video games where the character is faceless/quiet. You get to project yourself into him/her, and become who you're reading/playing.

That or, you know, it's got lots of dicks.

Yeah, not going to let a thread end on that note.

Good responses from... two or three of you. I'll be taking that information into consideration. Thank you.

It shouldn't explain everything.
It shouldn't leave things unexplained.

That's what makes a story good.
