I'm so excited to discuss this film and share it with the world that it's hard to find a point to begin with.
The film left me with a solid, 10-minute grin as the credits rolled and as I continued walking out of the theater. My smile only ended as I began endlessly gushing about it with my friends. We all had the same consensus; Drive is a truly awesome movie. It's one of those incredibly rare moments when you know you've just witnessed something remarkably special in the world of film. This is a future cult movie. I'm ready to see it again, and again, and again.
No frame is wasted. The film opens with a quick heist demonstrating The Driver's talent. Thirty-so minutes of solid story and character development, and then the pounding action picks up again. Not only is the music in this film great, but the sound design is incredible as well. The action is so visceral that it's comparable to films like I Saw The Devil or Oldboy. You feel everything in this movie. All the subtle details, all the incredible violence, the chases, the emotion. All of it.
Gosling. Cranston. Mulligan. Perlman. Brooks. The cast is perfect. There's no needless characters. Even the kid is convincing and fully fitting to the story.
I went into this film on the thin description that "it's a professional stunt driver who doubles as a getaway driver." I've now given you this thick promise of an incredible film. That's what I was expecting once I heard all the buzz from Cannes where it won Best Director. I hope it wins more awards at the Oscars, or is at least rightfully nominated. The cinematography alone is phenomenal. It blows my mind how beautiful every single shot is.
Drive is my favorite film of 2011. It redefines my definition of a "great" film. It's one of those few that stands above so high all the others that it feels a little unfair. I really hope Hollywood and the public pays attention to this one. I could discuss this film forever, but in order to do that everyone else needs to see it too. Do your part, and then let's talk.
