here for the weekly ping.

it's funny how being mentioned here last time inadvertedly made me more active on the site, and you can see how that turned out lol.

i'm not really trying to climb ranks, but for people that are, i reckon looking at the "top gainers" recent medals would help?

if i'm understanding correctly, top gainers means people that got the most points since last week.

that would mean they found games with medals that are likely really quick to clear and give lots of medals with high point value.

though it's true that people who are already high on the leaderboard are likely to already have medals from past games, it doesn't hurt to check i suppose.

then again since you can only see the 10 most recent medals, that usually translates to only one or two game at best.

wonder if there's a way to see someone's medal list sorted by most recently acquired

That's awesome. XD Congrats on getting into the Top Gainers this week too!

It might yeah... there's also a useful little gadget that lets you see what you're missing/find games with the most points or medals, maintained by the same good dude who maintains this list: https://bobogoobo.newgrounds.com/news/post/832879

Right.

That is possible yes. Though I reckon if you're just active enough and play no particular choices or strategy's really required. Certain artists are known to have quick-gain medal games too, like selfdefiant or MrNannings.

I don't think there is... not via the site at least, maybe via the program above...

In regard to maximizing medal gains during a brief duration of time you might also be interested in this: https://nijsse.newgrounds.com/news/post/862775

...if you have the time to invest you really can get in a crazy level of points in a really short amount of time, don't recall if this record has been surpassed since but I don't think so, if you're already high up in the rankings it of course usually won't be as easy to gain as much as quickly...

First I want to say thank you. Your medals guides have been most helpful, and very tedious games to otherwise get the medals in at that. I hope my hints have been of use to you as well, but if unaware, I do post in the medal hints and tips thread, and also not uncommonly giving medals advice in reviews. The more people helping each other out the better.

As far as looking at top gainers' recent medals to reach the top, that's not really going to help. A lot of times people can play games from further back, or fully complete out some older games, and very much can gain a lot of medals that way, and probably is the most common occurrence. As for the recent games, just play them if you like.

https://www.newgrounds.com/gameswithmedals <-- that is probably the single most useful URL for Newgrounds medal hunters as it is the complete list of all games with medals, and yes new ones still add to it. And, no, it is not the page you get clicking around the site. You can only get to that URL, far as I know, via a direct link or typing it out. It is the old medals pages and works far better than the new one ever did and is not missing any games (which the new one can be missing them sometimes). AND it is paginated like proper website design and not this endless scrolling nonsense so common in modern design. Maybe bookmark it or something.

There's a lot of games, and they don't all work on all browsers and systems, and unfortunately there is no "magic bullet" browser that works with all games either. And some games are hardware-dependent, so may not work on all computers even in the "right" browser, and so on. I know there's games that crash my machine -- typically games trying to do some WebGL stuff, although other WebGL games work fine. And it may work on some other computer.

If you want easy medals, then your best bet is find users who only go after the easy medals and see what medals they have and play copycat. If you want to climb to the top, then I recommend getting the hard stuff out of the way as soon as you can, and then pad it out with the easy stuff -- slower climb, but more solid foundation. This by the way is my strategy. But being that the hard stuff is hard for a reason, whether someone has the skills to pull this off will just depend on the person, and no shame in failing some ludicrously difficult, but not broken, medal. There's still skill-based medals I don't have, and pick them up when I can, from older games, because they're just really hard to get.

And of course broken medals, and other annoyances don't really help the medal collecting.

i've been noticing your reactions recently so i was aware of that. glad to be of help.

i've actually been using that one 900 pages medal thread as "padding" when i want to play medal games and i don't have anything specific lined up already, which would be the earliest medal games available on the site if i'm understanding correctly.

in regards to my own guides, i usually tend to make some for games that are "tedious", as you mention.

specifically, it's games that are gameplay-wise really easy or accessible, but for one reason or another are extremely time consuming to clear unless you know what you're doing.

personally i like puzzle games, since they're in that weird spot where it's fun and challenging to find the solution, but also if you can't be bothered you can get easy points if someone else has posted a walkthrough for it online.

it's the best of both worlds, and that's basically my mentality when making some of my guides. ease of access for future reference

for whatever reason, i hadn't actually considered that someone else would also be sistematically making guides for games, so i'll definitely give yours a look and see if i find something interesting.

thanks for letting me know

Sadly there is no easy way to view a user's medals sorted by any criteria other than the game. Retrieving the earn date (plus number of users who earned -> ability to estimate difficulty) requires making an additional request (appears in the popup window on the site). According to the sequential IDs there are almost 75,000 medals on the site, presumably including deleted medals/games. There's a lot of data to deal with and it would be far easier for NG to create an internal solution, or a better web API, but these specialized achievement hunter tools are often created externally. Sadly I can't commit to that kind of thing. So I've tried to work on simpler scripts to save a bit of time, but haven't had the chance to get back to what I was working on yet.

Also, if you find a broken medal, do use the flag/report feature, as API mods can see those reports. There's currently a backlog because it takes time to verify whether it is truly broken, but we're working on cleaning up medals with issues. I'm also hoping to use my scripts to find them proactively based on ones that haven't been earned.

See my news post with medal hunting links and tools. I made a program NGMedals that finds your statistics and unearned medals.

A medal not having been earned does not mean it is broken! Even in older games, with some unearned medal, sometimes it is the case it's just very hard to earn and, eventually, after a long time, one of the top medal hunters may eventually earn it, or sometimes someone completely new. I know I've earned several such medals as the first to unlock it myself.

It might be a red flag, other red flag being medals only earned by the creator, but a red flag in and of itself does not mean that something is indeed broken.

The two most common ways that I find medals, previously earnable, become broken, are games that rely on some external server(s) where eventually the game author(s) just decided to stop running the server(s), and game updates, where the game author breaks medals functionality in some update, then just never fixes it.

Most of the rest of broken medals were always broken.

Also, some people are more trigger-happy with declaring a medal broken, if it didn't work for them, despite many of these medals not being broken (in the way Newgrounds has defined it), and instead just very finicky/glitchy and sometimes requiring some particular browser and/or workarounds to obtain. Or good old clear cache and try again. As well as the good old save game, refresh page, reload game (so you don't get medals timeouts as much) in cases of long-running games that do have save functionality.

I think I am fairly conservative in what I report, and as evidence of that, one could compare the medals I've reported as broken, versus what I have listed on my unearned medals Newgrounds blog post, which are medals that were personally cheated from me. And even that blog post is not complete, as there's actually a lot more that were cheated from me but I don't always care to update it with everything particularly if it is some newer crummy game that may or may not even stick around on the site.

Also, the whole ability of authors to award medals to specific users is, IMO, a bad idea and very abusable, as sometimes authors have done that in cases they indeed have broken medals, and the only "earners" are those the author themselves specifically awarded to. And, no, this shouldn't "cut it" since even though people can PM the author to get added, at some point they could just stop adding people, or decide they don't care, or play favorites.

Does that happen a lot?

I found manually awarding a medal useful when I released singscar and the medal for submitting an entry was broken for some users.

I could see that the user submitted one, and they left a review saying the medal was broken with 0 stars.

So I fixed the medal, then I manually awarded it to them.

This changed their 0 star review to a 4.

So in your case you weren't abusing it, but yes I've seen cases where the medal is game-wise broken for everyone, the author doesn't fix it, and just manually awarded to a few people.

Does it happen a lot? I don't think it's happening a ton, but it is happening. I have definitely seen it before.

@orbitz

Here is I think an example of what I'm talking about.

Xbeiso RL

The game has two medals. They both say 0 points at the time, though if you click them you can see they are intended to be 5 point medals and have been manually awarded to people who commented on that game's submission, as that is what the medals say to do.

Also notice exactly the problem I'm talking about, as another commenter there had not been awarded the medals, since they are manually-awarded only, so it's really up to the laziness or lack thereof of the game's submitter. But even a dedicated submitter would surely not continue to manually award medals day in and out for an old game, after some period of time had passed.

And it's very possible this submission disappears, has medals removed, etc... I don't know. I can't guarantee everything sticks around forever, but it seems a good example at the time of this posting.

And while that one has them both as 0 point medals (which I say good!) there are ones that are not just 0 points, I do believe.

They are indeed broken medals as they never worked in the first place, only manually awarded.

Of course, we test to make totally sure medals are actually broken before removing them, hence the backlog. I was just talking about ways to find ones that might be broken, or became broken at some point like you said.

In the meantime something important may happen on the list soon. And @PhantasyReal should...

Русский военный корабль, иди нахуй!

And release [the Leopards-done] ATACMS & F-16s!

Congratulations to NeonSpider for the second place.

It is awesome to see that there are still a lot of active medal hunters and that the list is continuing to evolve.

Thanks to Bobogoobo for keeping this up to date all the time.

Yeah, first a nurse apprenticeship, work on an intensive care unit afterwards and now pursuing my Bachelor's degree in business informatics take its toll. There is nothing I could have done about it. There is not enough time to continue medal hunting. I still wish I could go back to it. It has always been a lot of fun seeing this little picture of an achievement popping up somewhere on the screen. Or the continuous approach on trying to figure out how to unlock a hidden medal or completely break a game apart. And even when I find some free time there is just to much stuff going on at the moment. I didn't expect this change of life, but suddenly it just happens. I am still watching until I can finally participate again.

Congrats to NeonSpider on moving up the podium! This is their first time at #2 after starting down at 196th in January 2016 and quickly moving up the ranks, and only ever losing a rank once, when PulseLane gained almost 40,000 points in a week to claim 4th place, though only being able to hold the spot for a few months. (I also saw while looking at old posts that next month marks five years of my running these updates :) )

back for another ping.

been playing some really old medal games this week and got stumped on lots of them for a couple reasons:

apparently the really early games have their own page with dedicated medal walkthroughs, though some of them suffered from age and are either inconsistent or straight up broken. this goes both for the games and the walkthroughs.

having fun with mechanical commando 2, although i'm missing one specific mission since it seems no one managed to ever actually pinpoint the exact requirements for clearing it, as the ones mentioned in the guide are definitely too inconsistent to be correct.

completely gave up even trying to play some game called EON because it's got real finnicky mechanics and far too precise requirements, on top of the walkthrough pictures seemingly having been yeeted out of existence over time.

decided to save myself from the foreseeable terrible experience by simply skipping it.

also, i learned i suck really bad at typing: either that or everyone else is super cracked at it.

i'm talking specifically about keyboard mayhem;

managed to clear the first 3 difficulties on the first try, and all of them seem about as difficult as their name implies, but then the really hard difficulty that is advertised as "only slightly harder than hard mode" was straight up physically impossible, and i really don't understand how any human being can manage to play it normally.

read up about "home row" but i honestly can't figure out how it's supposed to make typing faster, since the main problem i've been having is the sheer reaction time necessary to recognize the characters and their general location in the first place, which is unrelated to finding the actual key.

ended up basically cheating for it by taking out my old pc that runs so slow, half the games on the site can't run properly on it;

then on top of that i opened a whole bunch of chrome tabs to eat as much ram as possible, while downloading files off the internet.

even with all this set-up, it still was at least 3 times harder than playing hard mode in normal conditions, so i'm not really sure where this insane difficulty jump comes from.

now the reason i say it's probably just me being bad at it is because i took the chance to try other typing games; thought it might have just been an isolated case.

for example i went back to pico's arcade, with the mina miner minigame (which i never managed to get any medals for, for the same reasons mentioned above).

figured having the slow computer already out might have helped significantly, but my current all time best score doesn't even qualify me for the 100 blocks medal, and according to highscores people somehow got all the way up to a whopping 2000, so clearly i'm just not cut out for these.

sorry for the long rant, but i tried real hard at these and being so seemingly inept at it without having any idea of why the skill gap is that big made me really want to vent.

also speaking of broken medals, while using my old pc i found out a bunch of medal games i had bookmarked, and found something "interesting", in a sense.

apparently there's some game that's just called "game"; the creator has 5 medals on it, where each one is awarded for clearing each one of the microgames in it.

the games were being published one at a time over the course of multiple days, but the last 2 never got uploaded.

that means the game has 2 medals that aren't quite "broken", but they effectively are.

since they've all been implemented at the same time before any of the microgames were even published, it's likely they're all functioning properly, but with no games to play for them they're unobtainable. do those count as "broken medals" still?

For information on specific games/medals you may want to post in the medal games and tips thread :)

Personally, if a medal can't be unlocked in game, it's broken. If it requires doing something that was never added to the game I don't see how anyone could earn it legitimately. Depending on how long it's been and if the author is still around, we could try contacting them first.

i've been using that thread after realizing there was some information on a game i was playing at the time, didn't realize i could actually use the thread for help if needed.

i'm currently around page 300 i think so i'll consider looking into asking for suggestions when i'm done catching up

haven't tried contacting the creator yet since that wasn't one of my priorities, but i suppose there's no harm in throwing a DM their way

Don't feel obligated, you could also just report the medals as broken and API mods can handle any further steps. Anyway thanks for the vigilance :)

Two weeks late, but still thanks for adding me to this list.

It is awesome to see that there are still a lot of active medal hunters and that the list is continuing to evolve.
Thanks to Bobogoobo for keeping this up to date all the time.

Thanks. One thing I noticed is you have a very high medals points score for the amount of games played and medals earned. Not as much as PulseLane, but still. Maybe you are good at finding the games that award a lot of points? (The default max is 500 points, but some games have more than that, and a lot of games have a lot fewer, with the least points games having just 5 points total)

And hopefully you can get your nurse training and your business degree. Is there time to get a business degree while working as a nurse though? Or you are no longer working as a nurse and are now focusing on the business degree? I'm not really sure how those are related, but best of luck regardless.

Thanks. And I just want to say, there's still a lot of games I haven't played and even games I can't play (on this computer), so there's still a lot of room for people to collect those medals and advance past where I am, particularly if their computer can handle some of the chunkier games out there and they have good Internet connection speed.

You really have to use multiple browsers and setups for it, since some games demand one thing, and others demand something else. Ideally, they all should work well and the same in anything, but this is not always the case.

If someone has multiple computers, this may help as well, since bugs preventing play on one of them may not affect another, and so forth.

I would recommend using, at minimum, Firefox, Chrome, and PaleMoon (or some other browser that can handle the Flash plugin), as there can be games that won't work correctly except in one of those, but which one differs based on the game. There are games that only work in Firefox and there are games that only work in Chrome and there are games that don't seem to work in either, but maybe some obscure other browser. (I think there's at least one game somewhere that only works in Brave browser, or perhaps it was some other browser than that, as I forget).

I really do recommend that people test their games in at least the main browsers, that they are conservative on monitor sizes and resource usage, and that they don't develop in Flash anymore, as these are probably best practices so the widest amount of people can play the games properly. Also I don't recommend anything too fancy in the WebGL as that's another thing that can sometimes crash browsers/computers (probably if the graphics card isn't "good enough"). But a lot of people don't follow this.

Also, it may be a good idea at least for simpler kinds of games, to get them to work on the smartphones/tablets as well as desktop, although desktop should probably get the priority. I've seen people doing this.

That is correct. I always tried to finish a game before moving on to the next. As long as it was possible, even when it took me 16 hours a day for a single week and rewarded me 100 meager points in the end. Meager in comparison with the time spent for those 100 points in comparison to easy 5 or 10 point medals which maybe do not even take a few minutes.

I do not even try to understand it myself, it is just how the German education system works. For finishing the apprenticeship I was finally allowed to continue the education I couldn't continue without it. Even when I went to business school beforehand. Currently having nurse training is useless, but in combination with business and informatics it may still help me to work in e.g. medical informatics or something similar. But working in the medical sector has never been my personal goal. I always wanted to go for physisc, but I would only be allowed to study physics after receiving a Bachelor's degree in anything. Even social studies would allow me that afterwards. Therefore I just thought for myself, go for something different. The more versatile you are yourself, the more you can do on your own. That is my thinking in this situation.

hello beautiful people, i'm back for more notifications.

got real lucky and managed to clear the last side-mission in mechanical commando 2 so i'm pretty happy about that. though i still have no clear idea of what's the proper requirement for it.

don't have much else to add this time tbh.

i accidentally ended up wasting too much time playing games this week and this is the result. made a couple more guides and stuff like that, sent out way more DMs this week than ever before lol.

while i'm here, could someone enlighten me as to how the broken medal thread works?

long story short, i've been trying to play this and going by reviews and my own experience, it seems the medals are broken currently?

tbh it's not just the medals, as it seems to also not save progress even though it has a continue feature (unless i'm doing something wrong), so it's likely that the game itself broke over time.

could also be something related to specific browser used, as i've seen a few of those before, so i was wondering if anyone who's more well versed in these situations was willing to give it a try.

i also lowkey want to enlist the help of the community in trying to clear a different game that's just been sitting there by its lonesome in a long while, but i reckon i'll try to make its own separate thread for it when i feel like it.

gotta try making my own thread at least once
