Goomba Slaughterfest

Some good stuff you got here. Very impressive, I don't remember hearing this entry. There are some loops that do everything music correct that I just can't stand the sound of, and then there ones that do the same but for some reason I really like. This is the latter.

I like the instrument that starts it out. It sounds like it has some kind of LP, BP or HP filter on it. I can't really tell, maybe its just flanger. Its always a good thing when I can't tell how a sound was made.

In the middle and toward the end theres a really cool sound I like. Sounds like a gumba getting pissed off from Mario 64. Pissed off gumbas kick ass.

Theres some synths in there I don't like too much, but mostly it sounds good. The bass line is on the verge of "a little too simple." Again still sounds good, you got enough stuff going on besides it to fill the void. The lead melody which sounds like its played sytrus instrument (which I doubt it is) or some kind of flute synth sounds pretty good. Can't think of anything I'd do differently with any of this.

Overall a good loop. I can listen to for a long time before I get sick of it and the loop, although obvious, works out and doesn't loose the flow of the song. I don't know how long it is, but I think you should have the length and added some variation. Maybe some pirana plants and koopa troopas...? I guess a goomba or two is enough.

As for pumping me up for battle I'd say it does its job. Its fast tempo and a little bit crazy, but unfortunately the main melody is actually quite calming. My ears don't know what to think - slice my opponents head off or drink a pina colada by the pool. Hell, either way its fun to listen to and what else could matter?

Fun to review too. Keep the good ones rollin' and maybe I'll stop by again some day. Actually I will... for you other loop =X.

Awesome sounds. Seamless loop. Loop markers tho.

Love the soft echoey notes you drop in. I like how you match a sorta uplifting melody to the fast-action beats.

Seamless loop.

I felt it was lacking when played over and over though - the loop's too 'obvious' thanks to what's going on in the foreground. I call the way the simple melody starts/ends 'loop markers'. They're obvious changes that everyone will pick up on, even if it's firmly in the bg of a game and it makes the loop a lot less appealing.

I loved the sounds and everything though.

And it was still fun.

yay

this is what most DnB tracks need a kind of synth eh...

The underwater synth fx sounds great, makes the track running if you see it as I do... and it mixes perfectly with the other synth going on. the melody of the main synth sounds ok but nothing really remarkable. Well done though. The bass was pretty low, but it's great.

Good work, and good luck in the contest!

DSMagnum responds:

Interesting fact: there were three basses. At the beginning, there was a modulated DNB bass (C2 range), a moving bass (C3 range), and a subbass (C2 range). During the second half there were only the two C2 range basses playing. :P

Thanks for the comments. :D

Taffy sounds make taffy music.

I really loved this track. I loved the squishy sounding pad in the background. So damn cool. I made an instrument playing by modding the presets in garage band that sounded alot like it. You reviewed my song that had that thing in it, but I wish I could change the pitch/tempo of it instantaneously like you can. What program do you use?

Also, there was something uniquly funkey about this track. That squish pad as I'm calling it reminded me of a wah peddle. The drums weren't that original, but they were tight. My speakers died or something, so I'm listening to this through the muffeled moniter speakers. I can't wait till I get some new ones though so I can hear it in all it's natural glory. Given my speaker scenario, I gave you the benefit of the doubt for clarity. I also like to make assumptions that most people work equally hard on their tracks.

Oh, one more thing. Can you review my latest song "Antagonist?" I really liked the feedback that you gave me on two of my other tracks. It was kind/ harsh, and it really helps alot.
