I hope you're doing well ^^. Today is the day of the days for Newgrounds Underdogs Audio Contest, and it's time for me to share you my entry for this final round :0.

This is a small Bossfight-style DnB track, and I'm really proud of it. I really hope you'll enjoy it

This one is not finished too, but this is not a waste of time for me because I plan to finish it ASAP :).

Ahurac responds:

I'm glad to hear that ^^ I finished it but I do not plan to release it now, it will be for an EP :)

amazing so far keep it up

Ahurac responds:

Thank you so much, it's really nice to hear!

I like the stereo crackles at the beginning and the blissful chiptune melodies. There’s a good sense of climax into :15, and the mix is really clean and well-balanced. The progression is really smooth, and I love the melodic variety and upbeat tone here. The bridge at 1:26 with the ghostly counter-melody was a nice touch, although by the end the piece doesn’t feel entirely structurally complete. I was looking for another climactic section to hit the piece home towards the end, but instead it feels like the most engaging part of the piece is in the first half. Structural gripes aside, the production quality here is awesome, and you clearly have a great sense of flow and harmonizing too. I thoroughly enjoyed this one, Ahurac. Strong work! ^_^

Thank you so much Tainted for this nice review, it was a pleasure for me to enter NGUAC and I'll come next year to beat my score ^^. The song is not finished and I'll take notes of what all of you said to make it perfect.

Best regards, Ahurac ~

Starting off, I like your intro and transitional FX. I think you could stand to sidechain them against your synths.

The mix as a whole sounds pretty heavy on reverb and super mid heavy. Almost like there's a vinyl effect across the whole song.

Kick I think could stand to have a bit more bite, maybe saturation. KSHMR Essentials Kick is a good one-stop fixer. You could also tune it to the tonic. Something's going on with the harmonics in the upper low mids and it's not meshing to my ears.

Other than that, compelling melodies. It almost sounds too balanced of a mix for me. There are points -- your 8 bit percussion could stand to come out a LOT and possibly sidechained for where it's present. I can barely hear it under your top snare, but I know it's there because I know the sound -- so it's serving as mix clutter.

Reverb I would say you could stand to either take down by about half its value or more. I feel like it's being used to make synths sound more real, opposed to modulating them by hand. I say that as I'm guilty of having done it myself just to get done with a track. If you're going to do that, I would low cut up to 250 hz on the verb itself. Almost every instrument I'm hearing sounds like it has reverb on it, very boxy low mids.

I might tune your snare so the overtone is either a harmonic of or the tonic itself, to give it some feeling of belonging.

Beyond that, a bit short, but I enjoyed the tune. Thanks for coming out to NGUAC!

Ahurac responds:

Woah thank you for all these feedbacks! I'll take them in note for the final version (because yes, this is still an ID, that's why it's a little bit short).

-Official NGUAC 2020 Final Round Review-

The chiptune sounds are spot on as I was expecting them to be; I like the record player noise sample as well, however I think it should have stayed only at the beginning. From what I hear, you made it play for the entire track instead, and that makes a bit difference in terms of quality and enjoyment of the music itself; if that last statement was wrong, then there is a bit of noise in the drop that interferes with the song’s flow. The chord progression, despite being too repetitive, is quite captivating and flows well. I really love the arpeggiated square at 1:14, it’s something I enjoy listening to in electronic music. This submission is good and with solid, vibrant sounds, even if it was a bit short: good job, and best of luck for your future compositions!
