Hey everyone! This is my submission for NGUAC 2020 (Final Round). I tried to make Epic/Melodic Dubstep using a mix of a classic dubstep chords and a vocoded dubstep bass (Vocodex on FL Studio) for the drops.

I hope you like it!

Also GD creators you can use it in your levels ;)

I like the plucked synths at the beginning. The pause at :13 threw me off of the flow a bit, but the beats at :14 are super catchy and refreshing. The combination of the airy lead at :27 and the hard-hitting bass are great, although the chord progression is a bit cliche. The texture also feels like it’s missing some mid-range instruments, although the mix is rather clean and crisp. I like the cutesy riff and delicious hi-hats you introduce during the bridge at 1:55 and the subsequent variations on the bass at 2:10. There are a lot of fun rhythmic details in this piece, which help keep things engaging despite the minimalism at certain points. I would’ve liked to hear a little more variation on the refrain the second time around (at 2:37), and overall the melodic content in this piece could’ve been a bit more dynamic and memorable. Still, I really enjoy the sound design, rhythmic content, mastering, atmosphere, and progression of this one. Keep at it, Lagiarathalos! ^_^

what I liked:

• I LOVE the tremolo in the beginning, the pause at 0:12, and the reentrance with reverb; just think it sounds very cool
• I like the subtle dubstep elements in the buildup
• good choice to cut out everything in the middle, gave me time to breathe in preparation for the 2nd half

what I think could be improved:

• there's slightly too much sidechain for my liking when the pads are playing
• the drums during the drop are a little too loud and distracting
• I think you could add a little more reverb to the drums during the drop to match the reverb level of the pads in the background

besides my personal preferences in regards to mixing, I really loved this piece overall, great job!

Liking the 6/8 feel we start off, going into regular 4/4. Your rhythmic variation, use of samples, and diverse sound palettes are what shines in this piece.

Mixing varies at times. I would pull down your snare between 0.5 and 0.2 dB for your drops. It's just a little bit ear piercing -- but thank goodness it isn't hiding! That would sound worse. Your kick before 2:13 could stand out a bit more, and I actually think before 2:35 as well. May try something like KSHMR Essentials Kick, the free version, to enhance that transient some more.

Overall, very relaxing piece to listen to, good use of samples, good structuring -- I would appreciate a bit less reverb on most everything, especially naked sections, but that's me as someone who from using it lazily in the past has come to hate it. Very much enjoyed your presentation here, and looking forward to hearing more from you. Great work. :)

Thanks for coming out to NGUAC!

I gotta say, this is my personal fav.

Lagiarathalos responds:

Haha thank you. I wish that was the case for all the judges :)

-Official NGUAC 2020 Final Round Review-

The beginning is quite strange: there is some sort of tempo change which i have some doubts on. Still, props to you because that’s a risky choice. I don’t understand why you left an empty gap at 0:12, it kills the rhythm completely…
The rest of the first half of the track from 0:27 lacks a bit of “impact”: maybe you could have put some reverb in the kick and turn it off later on with an automation, or blend it with a proper snare (+ reverb) to make it louder. The second half, on the other hand, starts really well: I particularly liked the way you mixed the bass at 1:57. Here the drop is powerful and solid, making up for what came previously. My only complain afterwards is that you could have used a crash cymbal in the transitions (for example, at 2:30 and 2:37). Despite the criticism, this is a pretty good submission for the final round. Good luck!
