NGUAC 2020 Final round

As far as I understand, I made it to the final, so ... I think it's dance in this time.

What do you say?

I like the quirky pads at the beginning and the build-up into :20. The white noise is a little heavy at :21, and the mix feels a little strained underneath all the reverb and compression there and at :41. The transition at 1:02 was pretty neat, and I’m enjoying the melodies and sound design there too. The filter on the main pads could’ve used some variation at some point, but I like the minimal approach you took to the re-intro and the build-up back into 2:19. The melodic variations at 2:19 are nice, but the instrument playing them sounded a bit generic. I’ll also note that the drums didn’t quite pop in the mix like I wanted them to here. Still, the catchy rhythmic content and blissful melodies are both plusses, and the cool transitions and other compositional details helped make up for the somewhat generic arrangement. Keep at it, Retrize! :)

I'd like if those chords in the beginning didn't feel so centered and phased. The effect is nicer when they're opened up for your drop.

We've got a nice, relaxing theme, just sort of vibing there. It does stay the same throughout so I find myself really wanting a busier lead than the eighth notes you've got going on with that pluck and to a degree losing interest. However, your levels are good, and your sense of structure is strong.

I find myself agreeing with @mutty99, with a variation in progression or some sort of overarching, blazing lead, this piece would sing. As is, it's right there on the cusp of taking my attention, but sounding somewhat like bgm to a relaxing YT unboxing video of a cool gadget. That's not to say bad at all. In fact that there are no glaring problems to distract me is great. You're really getting somewhere. :)

Thanks for coming out to NGUAC!

-Official NGUAC 2020 Final Round Review-

I remember how this track was when I first heard it; I think you’ve updated it changing a few things at some point, improving some aspects here and there.
The lack of originality of this submission (Since the same chord pattern repeats itself over and over) gets backed up by the structure, which is pretty good and well written. About the sounds you used, you’ve chosen nice synths and made a good use of the phaser function in the beginning and in the end of the song; they give all together a really pleasant Synthwav-ish sensation, to the point of relaxing the listener quite a bit. Like I already said, this piece could have been better if you’d made some variations in the chord progression; still, good job for making it this far in the competition!

This was a very professional sounding track! All the sounds feel very cohesive and smooth. Progresses nicely as well!

I could praise you all day, but I'm just gonna jump into the criticisms I had. I feel like it should all be a little crisper in general? I do like the atmospheric space it has is rather unique to this genre but I still don't know how I feel about it. I also wish 0:21 to 1:18 had a bit more of a defined and tangible melody. I know this kind of is a habit the genre has, but I feel like this song doesn't really have it's own identity? I feel like there are a ton of other tracks that are essentially the same, which only a few having the character to be memorable. I know this is very vague and hard to pinpoint, but it was just something I couldn't help but think, and thought I might as well tell you.
Regardless of all that, I thought this was pretty good, especially for being made in 4 days, Wow!

retrize responds:

Thank you, I'll keep that in mind.)
