I made The Torchbearer for the second round of the NewGrounds Underdogs’ Audio Contest. I happened to be (safely) on vacation at the time, so I only had two days at the end of August to make this. I wanted to try something new since I knew I wouldn't make it to the final round anyway, so this is what I came up with. Bright was going to be released as an EP around 4 songs long, but then I made more songs and it grew to album length. Oops! I made all the music in Bright between the release of Songs To Spacewalk To and the end of 2020. I think this album marks a real improvement in the quality of my music without giving up my style. I hope you enjoy the album!

Hi, I'm Gizmote (he/they)! I like music so much that I started making some myself. I started making music in 2017 under the name GizmoDude8128 and have been releasing songs frequently ever since! My music tends to fit in genres such as electronic, EDM, ambient, and chiptune, but I've also done a bit of orchestral, techno, and synthwave. My two biggest releases are Songs To Spacewalk To and Bright, both released in 2020, the revenue from which is donated to the Arbor Day Foundation! My biggest inspirations include C418 and Waterflame, as well as dozens of other artists. As of 2021, I have released over 60 songs, and I plan on making more creative works as long as I can! Agreed with adr3, interesting intro, simple and additive, simple transition with a pause then impact, my ears wanted to hear a slight variation in the chord progression, adding a Dmajor chord on the beat 4 of the last measure of your progression just every once in a while would have added a welcome little spice.

THat transition into the main beat i wouldve loved a small uplifter, or at least a crash or downlifter at the beginning. Your melodies are slow, but so is the song. I really wanted to hear a bit more variation by 1:21, and especially some variation in the chord structure.

this is very pleasant to listen to, almost does seem like you just messed around on a keyboard in the key of g minor, likging the rhythmic change up at 2:20, very welcome change of pace here.

I wouldve loved to see a bit more variation and change up of the chord structure, i know you only did it in 5 days, but im judging everything the same!

Its slow, calm, simple, and pleasant and that already has a lot going for it, but for active listening, i wanted more. as a background piece, its pretty good!

Interesting intro we have so far, and nice spacy vibe. I'm not sure so much about panning the intro lead only into the right channel.

The piece as a whole seems to have roughly the same feel throughout. Nothing offensive sounding. Slow leads. There's not a lot for me to comment on in that regard.

Mix wise, it sounds pretty relaxed. I would bring out the drums some more, but that's about it. It's simple and naked enough that nothing can really hide in the mix.

My main complaint is there aren't really a lot of moving parts to such a slow piece, and it seems to remain mostly the same throughout. I might recommend a look at Kush After Hours' video called rule of pairs. Some of your transitions could be stronger and more moving just by adding something as simple as a white noise sweeping transition sfx. Others, with an arpeggio running up and down the scale. Just something to let the lead out the rear, you know?

But overall not unpleasant at all to listen to. And I say that as a compliment considering you had two weeks to work on this one. Thanks for coming out to NGUAC!
