Captain's Hat

My submission for Newgrounds Underdogs’ Audio Contest Knock-out Round 2020.

This started off as a song with lyrics and it was about a captain's hat. I ditched the vocals and that melody associated with those vocals but I kept the name. I don't have any better ideas.

I would super appreciate any thoughts you have and thank you for listeneing!

I somehow didn't do any EQing on this. Not sure how that happened.

Congrats on making it to the NGAUC final round. Well deserved. This is a very interesting song. Very playful. Hard to predict what direction it's going. Can't believe you didn't do any eqing, but I don't think it's necessary. You just chose the sounds really well so they don't sit in each other's space. That's better than trying to fix clashing frequencies with eqing.

Michael-Flaherty responds:

The EQing thing is interesting to me, I would normally put an EQ plugin on every single track, I was avoiding it this time just to concentrate on the composition and then when it came time to polish thought it sounded good, probably because I'm using VSTs designed to sound good out of the box and the song is suited to more naturalistic tones. Or the song would have benefited from an EQ pass and I was being lazy. Not sure. Thanks for the review!

Instrumentation almost sounds Bill Wurtzish

Michael-Flaherty responds:

OMG! I got super into Bill Wurtz while I was making this song and wanted to incorporate his style into this song. When I finished I thought I deviated way too much and no one was going to pick up on that.

Super fun song! I love all of the old school video game influences in this. Great job! :)

I love it!
It feels like a child song to me ^^ I mean it's very funny and happy, with a little bit of curiosity! Definitely the type of songs I'm listening to :) Good luck for the NGUAC!

Michael-Flaherty responds:

Thanks so much!

Very funky, as always :D
0:37 to 1:11 definitely gave me Mii Channel vibes.
Keep it up body!

Michael-Flaherty responds:

I sincerely love the music on the Wii so I consider that to be a very high compliment. Thank you!
