Something interesting that I decided to pull out of the archives, dust off, and share with Newgrounders everywhere. It's pretty ancient, so the audio quality may be a bit lacking. I did what I could to clean it up during the mastering process, but some issues were simply too persistent.

This piece is themed around its title, as my songs tend to be. It's completely subjective to each individual listener. It probably won't incite the same kinds of emotions in you as it does in me, but that's kind of the point. The music itself starts off softly with sort of a zen-like atmosphere, but it doesn't stay as mellow throughout. I attempted to run the emotional gambit within the song. How successful it actually is depends entirely upon your own perceptions.

Please, by all means--let me know what you think.

Reminiscent of Dire Docks from Super Mario 64.

To be frank, you should've kept the ambience in the beginning. The trance/dance concept you went for really ruined the blissful introduction. The percussion wasn't all that showy, and prominent either. Sounded very muffled, and lacking distinguishment for my ears to indulge in. It was all plain, and flat. The introduction -- you should expand on that and turn it into a whole new song. Completely cut off that completely cacophonous transition. My honest words, and humble opinion.

Philosophy: Emotions are a pool of variables that all coincide; contradict; through balance. Every emotion is a language unto itself, to support our disposition towards a thing of itself. We like to refer to them by their labels we've given them.. but as much as you try to define them.. It's always a positive and negative attraction that come to and fro in a perpetual state of mind in the end. It's simple a positive and negative chemistry. We only labelled them for how humans chose to use the two opposing; coinciding energies. Humans are able to fake emotions, aswell. Humans are able to play reality, and turn it into their own fake, and illusionary world of bias logic, and misconceptive measures.. We are all mad scientists in a sense.. Sometimes I question if our emotions are even real.. or it's actually outlets we have that make us express our positive and negative energy towards this world, and it's inhabitants.

ChronoNomad responds:

Thanks for the honest review. I've never actually made that particular distinction before, but it is an interesting thought. Now I have the Dire Docks theme running through my head. Right about now you should probably check out my #1 song: Forever Fantasy. That will probably deliver just what you felt was lacking here. Of course that's entirely up to you, and I'm sure you'll get there eventually either way.

Anyone can fake an emotional response, but doing so for personal gain is an abhorrent practice. Real emotion is powerful and visceral, and failing to validate it can be foolish or even dangerous. Emotions such as anger are normal and natural, but the most important part is how that anger manifests itself. Shoving negative emotions down deep and pretending they don't exist is like filling up a powder keg, and sooner or later someone or something will cause the fuse to be lit.

hmm

I know this is a little vague but when it turned from just bells to a techno beat I almost lost the feeling of "emotion" in this tune. The build up and cool off so to speak in my personal opinion had the most "emotion" in them.

ChronoNomad responds:

That seems to be a popular opinion about this one. Can't say that I really disagree, in all honesty. Still, I like the music overall. Just another case where the title just doesn't do the song justice--or vice versa. Que sera, sera.

Thanks a lot for reviewing! I was beginning to wonder where my #1 reviewer had gotten off to...

Cool song.

As always, actually.

I like the way you approach your theme in intro, with fluidity, romantism, with flutes and bells to definitely cut with this first impression quite suddenly. In fact, i said definitely, but that's not correct. You just change this melody's main meaning. In a cool way, I must confess, and this acceleration indeed leads to something less emotional.

Great variations and most of all, great way to arrive on them. For the acceleration, a simple cymbal inverted (i don't remember the name it gots) which took me by surprise. And about the modulation at 2:50 for some measures, changing tonality suddenly, into the melody and coming back to the main tonality with no more flourish than drums and without finishing the sentence on a long note or without preparing some kind of step-by-step return to it was very good in my opinion. (I hope you got me, but i really doubt it is crystal clear :D)

Anyway, I rather like it, but I'd like to tell you about a few points that doesn't convince me.
I definitely hate the recurrence of the clap and its sound. I'm sure a hat would have been better.
I also really enjoyed your kind of excitation in the battery, at 1:27 and 3:07, but i think reinserting this rhythmic cell each two measures (or something likes that), doesn't serve the song, as they sound more like a transition than a accomagnment rhythm.
A last thing that doesn't really work in it (still in my opinion), is that the kind of legato voice seems to slow down the song. You've got very tonic percussions, but this main melody, with its bending and (too) slow attack doesn't make something that could be a counterweight to it, but on the contrary, prevent the song from moving on.

Overall I like this song, that sometimes makes me think about Donkey-Kong on game boy ;), and I think you've made efforts to present this solid piece of work. Not your best though, in my opinion. :)

ChronoNomad responds:

Nope, not my best; I have to agree with you there. This piece is old...like really, really old. That being said, it's quite good for my lack of experience at the time, but it's just not up to the same quality that I can put out now.

I don't really disagree with you on any points here, and I was still using stock percussion riffs along with my own back then. Your review is honest and thorough, and your proclivity for explaining both the positive and negative aspects of the music - in your opinion - is greatly appreciated. I respect how you explain that it is your own personal opinion, and you don't try to sell it as the only possible conclusion. Big props for being straight up, yet not in any way acting like you're somehow better than everyone else and that you know it all. Your attitude toward reviews equates to high-level respect points in my book. :D

Honestly, I was never very happy with the main synth that I used because of that bending. Back when I made this I didn't really consider the fact that I could ditch the bend simply by using some offset, so every note just has that crazy tone slide at the beginning. It's good, but all those little quirks make it less-than-great. It was fun to make, it's old, and I felt like sharing it here. All in all, I feel pretty content with your tell-it-like-it-is score of 8. Thanks for the amazing review!

Don't know if it's because of my actual mood but..

"I just want to trust other people... Why? Don't be stupid! To believe someone is the most important part in friendship... And most of all, in love.

So why... Why can't I really trust anyone from the bottom of my heart? Why it's so hard to trust someone? I only see darkness everywhere around them...

I can't take it any longer... I want to free myself from this pain, it's hurt me so much...

Let me alone! Damn it! Why do you have to tell me that they're manipulating me... Just go away with your paranoia... "

Maybe it's because I'm not really well at the moment, but this song's just waking up every emotion inside of my heart, about myself. Because of some events, I'm not able to trust someone, I always have that feeling they're just mocking me.

That's paranoia and I live with it, but as the song goes on, I want to explode, to run, to fin a way out of this nightmare.

Frome the lonelyness inthe beginning, this song wake up my rage and hatred.

ChronoNomad responds:

Rage and hatred? Well, emotions do come in a wide variety of flavors. I guess we all need to feel even the negative ones from time to time, if for no other reason than catharsis. Holding it all in just makes things a whole lot worse.

A little healthy paranoia is natural. It helps us to be aware of our surroundings and avoid dangerous situations. An overabundance of paranoia can be crippling or even devastating. Food for thought.

Well, best of luck with whatever's going on that is taking you down such a dark and narrow path. Being afraid to trust people will make you perpetually unhappy. I do my best to live by this philosophy: "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." In other words, I give my trust freely...at first. Once that trust is abused, winning it back is a whole lot harder.

Very smooth

I liked the atmosphere. Nice transitions, great rythm and flow. The title also fits perfectly, I can totally see this in a movie.

ChronoNomad responds:

Thanks a lot! I really appreciate the review, and I'm glad you enjoyed the music. I would absolutely love to hear something of mine in a movie some day. :D
