Long Story Told Short

Hello!

I made this song on 3. September 2010, and uploaded it to the genre Miscellaneous, but now I see that it didn't get popular there, and that I actually uploaded to the wrong genre. When I uploaded it, I was not sure about the genre, but now I see that this is more a Classical song. So I delete the previous version and upload it here now.
This song was made in FL Studio demo, and I was very new to making music, but had played piano for a long time. It's all made in on instrument, one piano roll in one pattern. I am sorry for the looong silence at the end; the piano sample was so long. :O

The reason for the title, is simple; I think the song sounds like a story. The darker piano tells one part, and the lighter one another part. Notice how the darker piano takes the role as bass/background. Notice also how the lighter piano kinda really wants to tell more at 1:05.

Yes, it's short, but I won't do anything with it now. I like it as it is. Take the fact that I painted all the notes into the piano roll; no copy/pasting, and each part is UNIQUE! :D (take the two lighter parts, separated by a break with mostly darker piano; the one is major and the other is minor)

An important reason for why it sounds like a story, is the swapping between major and minor. Just listen!
When I hear this song today, I fell really satisfied and I have troubles stopping listening to it
I hope you think the same, and I really hope you enjoy this as much as I do! =D
Please rate and review fair :)

Sounds good

Well, the pianos sound pretty good here. And I like the "story" you are telling with them, it sounds very interesting.

I also like how both pianos have something to "say" in this track. Maybe the darker piano is a bit too loud for the other piano, but that's how life goes. The sad/cruel/evil stories are heard and the happy/cheerful stories are overlooked.

Only thing that bothers me is the long silence at the end. Is there no way to edit it out? Audacity is a good way to edit sound files, for example.

ErlendHL responds:

Hey thanks for the review! Not long time ago, I found out that there is a way. Well it's too late now, if I shouldn't delete this and upload a new version, which I won't.

Interesting duet

Ah, the clash of two parts of the piano played alongside one another. Could this possibly be played on the same piano at the same time? Or is it a more modern duet that is played by two people on two pianos?

I like the way that the clash compliments the piece. Perhaps a change of instrument would be a more "disturbing" change - have you considered changing the lighter parts for a harpsichord? That could add a little flair to the piece and give you some other area of contrast.

Yes, I understand the concept is to tell the story short, but perhaps a minute longer for the track wouldn't make that much of a difference to the overall impression that the piece gives.

ErlendHL responds:

Yeah maybe another instrument would be nice. I am not sure it can be played with two hands on a piano... gotta try to learn my song on piano! And yes perhaps it should be longer. Anyway it's not short because it should be a short story. It's pretty much because I felt I had used all "prospects" of the melody.. idk how to put it. Anyway, thanks for your review!

Oh, pianos.

Good piano in the beginning, I enjoy pianos. The transition from the intro to the main thing from 0:13 to 0:15 seems off, it just ends and starts again. Technically, this is really good. I don't hear anything off theory-wise. The guitar sounds good as well. As said in another review, it's very rhythmic rather than melodic. Wait, it ends at 1:40? That's no fun, there's a whole 20 seconds left! Aside from that, the song is overall quite good. My only real quibble. Have you studied composition? I can't really find a theme/variation setup or ABA, which is what it seems like it wants to be.

Hope this is helpful.

ErlendHL responds:

No I haven't studied composition; I just started and let the song tell me how I should continue. So idk what theme/variation setup nor ABA is... :(

Calming

Really find this to be an admirable piece I think anyways. It works out quite well too. It just seems to kind of have a love feel but also a dungeon feel as well as if one was trying to save someone else here too. Really nice yet short piece anyways, I like it.

The piano is just real simple sounding on the ears and I like how the lower keys double as bass notes since they have a after echo that is played after the notes are done playing. Really soft piano piece though.

Overall, soft love tune.

Not bad

I'm not entirely sure about this piece, but it's certainly technically quite good.

First thing I noticed was your excellent use of dynamics, combined with the instruments used, and the symphonies. Obviously labeled as a classic track, but it's influenced by some newer fast-paced style with a dark feel over it. At least that's the feel I got from it. Even the lighter part sounds eerie.

It does, however, sound a bit messy at times, and somewhat out of tune. It seems like you just tried to put too much into the track and it somewhat backlashed.

ErlendHL responds:

Thank you for the review! Yeah might be something a little different from classic music. I could sounds messy because of the long piano sample. Like playing a song with many notes with the right pedal down all the time. I'm not good at finding decent samples nor editing them...
