[herd] A Look At The World

Ok, so after some motivation, I decided to make a classical song. I actually don't know very much about the genre, but I tried my best. This was made using everything that FL Studio 9 comes with. That means no downloaded VSTs. Sorry.

Rate and review please.

EDIT: I have made this shorter by almost a minute thanks to Fro's and RogerBK's advice.

Melodic and slightly mournful

I can see this track starting to build up towards more of a happy sounding beat, but there is a certain degree of mournful sounding backing from the piano here, that makes you stop and think, but conjuring up a very nice sounding melody to it, you've given us a greatly insightful piece that really does convey a great deal of emotion.

With how everything settles down, there is a great deal of musical inspiration and the piano does belnd in nicely with the rest of the track in the counter melody and the beat that you've constructed. With this, I might suggest some sort of a solo from the counter, since the piano's power might drown out this too much.

Great advice. I will try that in my newer version of this song. Although the way you say it makes me look like I know lots about structure and all that, but I don't =/ I think I can figure out what you mean though lol. Thanks a lot.

I thought this had a nice little piano entry but I did not expect the drums to come in do I guess that is pretty original really and that you spent a lot of effort onto it and I liked the instruments you picked because they all played an important part into the song but without the piano, the whole song would be wrecked.

I think you should have toned down on the instruments because I couldn't really hear the piano and then all the instruments go out for another harmony solo which was really good and I could hear it all over the other sounds but this was a pretty basic song so there isn't much in it so try to make it a little bit longer because it was all detailed and everything and all that so just try that.

oh, ok. I see. This is my first try with these kind of instruments so I don't really know what to expect. I don't really listen to this type of music either, but I thought it would be fun to try. Thanks for the review.

It's got a nice and simple introduction. I felt the melody line could have been a little more prominent than it was in the first minute or so, and definitely gets drowned by the synths that come in at 0:55 and the more ambient one a few seconds later. The drums are nicely done; they're loud enough to be prominent without cutting through the synths.

When the new synths/instrument sounds take over the main melody from the piano sound the track got a lot more listenable-to, simply because there was more of a focus than just all the chords and melody at once. The transition onto the pads was a little abrupt, but works well once it settles in. The pan-flute-type thing at 3:05 and the glock (maybe?) at 3:12 were nice touches, I almost wish they'd come in a little earlier just to help add to the variety a little more than they did.

I think cutting a minute off wherever you did definitely helped, as this track only JUST started to get repetitive in places, but not much further than that. So definitely was a good idea to cut that minute out. For something made solely out of the FL instruments, this is nicely done. A lot better than a lot of the creations FL tends to have hurled onto newgrounds, anyway. It's a nice quirky piece, and works well for it.

Herdunculus responds:

Hmmm. I like your review because there is a lot of advice in it that I could use. I will definetly make this better using what you, and others, have suggested. Thanks a lot. Oh, the glock you mentioned at 3:12 is actually still the pan flute but I added a quieter lower note to it and a traingle sound (I forgot what it was called XD).

Had it's good points.

Overall I found it okay, and I can see this having potential. However there were things I picked up on.

That sytrusy piano chord seemed to just play over and over which for me got pretty repetitive. The progression was fine, just maybe variate them by making inversion of the Em7 and Dm7 to maybe stop it getting repetitive.

At around ~1:03, there was a stringish thing that came in. . The notes in my opinion don't go with the piano thing you have there (Em7 with F-Major and Dm7 with E-minor). I'd suggest changing the whole chord pattern altogether for that one section, as it just sounded a bit off to me (only my opinion, I might be just too picky)

Drums were okay, considering you were using the RealDrumKits pack from the FL stock sound, though in time you may want to change the sounds as I think they've been overused and aren't really the best range of sounds to use. Drum patterns were fine.

At ~2:06, I though the string section I heard before came in, sounded a whole lot better. I really liked this section, very ambient indeed and the extra instruments you added were really well put in my opinion. That was probably the best part of the song for me. . It's a shame the first bit didn't really measure up to it.

I'll say it's good, and it has a lot of potential to be something epic. Maybe use different instruments that aren't FL stock sounds so it gives it an edge and doesn't make it sound generic like a lot of the FL stuff you hear on here and in other places. Don't think this suits classical at all =P.

I hope you improve this more ^^, this could be something awesome :] PM me if any of my jive didn't make sense. .

Thanks for a nice, lengthy, in depth review. I will try to fix all the faults listed here, and will submit a newer version soon. I never thought this would get the kind of feedback it did. Thanks.

Good song

Much like Fro I got reminded of some RPG "town music", but not the starting tow (music there seems to be more sad, as the hero has to leave, heh), but some place you travel to later, when the first bosses have been beaten and the hero then comes into a bigger town where people are more cheerful in general.

However, towards the end the song gets a bit repetitive, so maybe you should try to bring some more variations into the song. Just like you did at 2:06, where you bring in some deeper sounding melodies.

Herdunculus responds:

ok thanks for the review. I like the feel im projecting with this song. I am now working on a newer version of this, and it will implement all the advice given here. Thanks.
