I'm still a bit of a noob when it comes to mixing music in Logic, so any advice on production and how to make the instruments sound sharper would be appreciated.

This is actually a clipped version of a longer project, which, when finished, will include other parts of the DPPt legendary themes, as well as a "medley within a medley" of every single legendary theme from the game series (they added some new ones in HeartGold and SoulSilver, so I have my work cut out for me there) in the frame of the climactic, dissonant Arceus battle theme. Currently, though, that section is a work in progress, and I have a lot of arrangement work to do before I can make a proper mix of it. I'm also going to rewrite the entire thing for proper full orchestra + peripherals, which will make it far more epic than this MIDI-based arrangement.

I got chills from this. That's how awesome this is. Great work!

Different in a great way

I was going to write that it sounds too much like the Brawl version of the Spear Pillar song, and though many parts still sound exactly like it, especially in the first 2:15 and 2:45-3:40 (so much like it, that I took off a point), once it sped up, and the other legendary themes came in, I was shocked at how well they blended. There also is a little too much of Dialga/Palkia and not enough of the others (roughly 2:15 or so is almost entirely Spear Pillar, and the theme still pokes out in Giratina's theme. Mesprit/Azelf/Uxie get barely anything.)

But I'm nitpicking; this is quite good for a "noob" project! I wish more people would remix in a style like this. Electronica and rock are ok, but they blend together, while any classical one stands out. The fact that this isn't complete is stunning to me, as it certainly sounds like it is.

DysfunctionalDragons responds:

Thanks for the criticism.
I've heard the "it sounds too much like Brawl" one before, which is part of my motivation for re-orchestrating it. The current score I'm working on gives instruments like oboes, english horn, bassoons, etc. some prominent parts, instruments that didn't get used at all in the DS and Brawl versions of the piece, and give other orchestral instruments some room to breathe and assert their individual character. Also, I'm going to be using a different sample library if I can, because it turns out that many Brawl mixes use Apple's orchestral softsamples, a fact that didn't become apparent to me until I finally got a Wii two months ago and heard some non-Pokémon mixes from that game.

This isn't even HALF of the final version. I cut it off on a transition between the Giratina section and the Uxie/Mesprit/Azelf section, which I was somewhat displeased with. The reason I use a lot of Palkia and Dialga will become apparent when I finish the recapitulation. But in a nutshell, it's a framing device to give the piece unity; even as as the references get denser, the harmonies and rhythms get more complicated, and the mix otherwise gets crazier and crazier (trust me, it WILL get crazier), the listener (even one not exposed to the source material) can still make sense of it. Another reason is that Palkia and Dialga are most iconic of Generation IV (being main mascots for the two kickoff games), so I feel justified in bringing their parts out, and I also just plain like them. And their theme from DPPl, which is the longest and most dynamic Pokémon battle to date. It certainly provides a lot of material to work with, both in motif and in form.

Thanks again for writing a review. Thanks to everyone else, too. I've been a bit depressed lately, and seeing things like this motivates me to actually finish my projects.

............

WOW.

Let me see..

I think that bump up should get you a few more views. This is very nice, a completely different remastered style, and its very pleasing.

It may not be the bit style were all used to, but this song brings out a more realistic quality to the musics, and makes the memories that we all have more vivid than vague, brightening the experience.

Poke-Awesome

This is really, really well done. I wouldn't call it "noob" work at all. I'm highly impressed. Funny, being 20 years old and still loving Pokemon. XD Anyway, this is a really, really good remix of all the battle themes, and they all blend together well. 10/10 well deserved! Keep it up!
