First and foremost, THIS IS NOT SOMETHING I MADE UP!
I heard a version of this floating around the net sometime in early 2001, and it was sloppily put together, at a deplorable bit rate, and overall just sounded like butt. But it was an amazing idea.
Last year, I decided to make it better.
May I present to you;
Closer by Nine Inch Nails, but with a Super Mario twist.
Sounds are as follows -
super mario 3 overworld song - that was sampled from an emulator.
In-game sound effects taken from The Mushroom Kingdom (thanks guys!)
All other music besides the smb3 song and the NIN song generated with Magical 8-bit plugin.
Obviously, the song is Closer by Nine Inch Nails.
Trent Reznor is pretty laid back about his music. He uploaded one of his albums to a torrent site because his record company was selling his albums for $30 a pop, something that Reznor frowned upon.
So, I hope to the good Lord above that, should he find this, doesn't take my ass to court or some shit.
Should any NG mods get mad at me about this, I'll remove it no questions asked. Just please don't ban my account!

Wanted a clean copy of this. I remember the old rough one. Thanks for doing a clean one. Of course, credit to the original author, this is genius.
it's good and all
BUT you could of done so much more. You have the opportunity to make something phenomal and you did a good job, there's tonnes to like but you had to make a complete remix instead of just a fun mix down.
Catchy...
The Mario loops are too strong, they drown out the original NIN track.
Other than that, why the hell does this work?
