Part of my upcoming project, "Diner Noir".

Song description :

Three voices entwine within the melody, each a narrative thread woven into the song's tapestry. The first voices, tender and raw, share the complexities of love—a couple's whispered conversations, navigating the labyrinth of emotions. Then emerges the solitary voice, resolute and unwavering, singing of self-belief and resilience in the face of uncertainty. Finally, a nostalgic tone, rich with reminiscence, pours forth, threading tales of bygone days and lost moments. These echoes, distinct yet harmonious, paint a portrait of human resilience, intertwining the essence of love, self-assurance, and bittersweet recollections in the symphony of life.

Personnel and composition :

  • Lyrics, piano, guitar (acoustic & electric), flute melody, mixing and mastering by me.
  • Drums and bass played by my backing band.
  • 101 bpm, 3/4 time signature, written in D Minor with an E♭ minor outro.

Questions :

Why 3/4 and not 4/4 ?

3/4 has more emotional impact, and it was a challenge too.

Why D Minor ?

As a guitarist, it's easier to play along. It's also one of my favorite keys due to F Major being a relative allowing for some more creativity.

Why the sudden change in sound ?

It's not quite sudden, I've started with Jazz and it will always be my main domain. I veered into other genres for inspiration, to challenge myself and to broaden my knowledge. This is merely a return to my roots, with a fresh, reinvigorated sound. A bit like cross-training, where you play an alternate sport to improve your main one.

Author's note :

As I mature, I've come to the conclusion that less is more, but it doesn't mean effortless.

You have to put much more energy into the theoretical aspect, the thinking rather than the work itself. Some compositions, sounds and instruments each take space, and they have to do their little thing under the spotlight (or I shall say microphone), a group effort.

In the age of over-compressed, over-designed and over-produced music, we sometimes look back to the greats. Isn't it all so tiring, having to reinvent the wheel every time ?

Happy New Year to NG,
