Dad left quite the aftermath. Our once beautiful and humble home, is teetering on the edge of repossession. He took every last drop of money from us. I hope the cocaine was worth it. Some days were definitely harder than others for both me and my Mother. But the cold sleepless nights, empty bellies, nightmares of losing everything overnight, and our water being constantly shut off, takes a huge toll on a 3 year old child. My Mother tried absolutely everything to find a new job, but jobs are hard to come by when you live in the city as a single mother on welfare.

Some days, I wouldn’t even eat just so that she could, because without a mother, I was going to die anyway. Where is my family? Is there anyone out there who can help us? Why is Dad not here to carry me on his shoulders anymore through the pain? I am always in the hospital with kidney and stomach infections, mostly because I was eating and drinking poorly, and being born premature had its drawbacks in of itself and didn’t help in that. The day that I knew true scarcity, was the day I learnt that the world isn’t always a beautiful place.

I was desperate, I was constantly on edge, I was hungry, I was cold. It’s constantly dark… How could he do this to us? Guess I must adapt and be use to it, I have no choice. And if I am going to outlive his cruelty, then I absolutely will.
