So here we are - the semifinals of the 2023 audio deathmatch. I'm beyond excited that I even made it this far, and I'm up against one hell of an opponent this round - Lordant, who is a master of blending classic orchestral elements with modern pop motifs and synths.

I figured I'd try something a little different, since doing a fourth purely orchestral cinematic piece felt like it would be too repetitive. More importantly, I'd pretty much burned up all my cinematic creative juices with the last three rounds and was struggling to come up with something good enough anway.

As usual, I have no clue what genre this would be, so I'm going with either "downtempo" or "fusion" - pick your favorite.

Somehow, I forgot to post my review here earlier. I apologize.

I like the radio voice and distorted atmosphere at the beginning - paired with the jazzy chords, the piece sounds downright moody. The subtle swell into :45 and the introduction of the cello line there are both gorgeous, and the rich bass there is a nice touch as well. The mix is strong, if a tad bottom-heavy towards the beginning. The riser into 1:18 is a bit cheesy, but I really like the prominent beats and soaring string melodies there. Love the dense rhythmic syncopations and rich texture throughout - even the relatively mellow bridge is really engaging and dynamic. I might’ve liked to hear the piano solo to be a bit more up-front in the mix, but otherwise you nailed the production quality here too. The final chorus feels really triumphant, and the ascending line leading into the post-chorus at 3:32 is a nice touch as well. I might’ve liked to hear more of a proper outro, but that’s a pretty small detail in the grand scheme of things. I’ll also say that the arrangement of the piece is a bit generic, but at the same time the progression flows so smoothly with all of the dramatic crashes and rich harmonies. I love seeing you put a jazzy, energetic twist on your style here. Keep it up, Papkee! ^_^

I think the vinyl scratches in the beginning are a bit too loud, but beautiful playing, chords, and blending when those strings come in. Gorgeous texture by 46 seconds.

I think the mix on that lead cello could be just a little less sibilant and low mid heavy.

1:19 was an unexpected change-up. I have no comments here beyond perhaps to reduce the cymbal volume just slightly, as little as .1 to .2 db, and give a bit more high mid to that bass, more presence and center it below 230 hz.

Your chord progression is great for easy listening

I'm hearing a fizz in my right ear through 2:48 that is pretty high up in the mix. At first I was unsure if it was my tinnitus (it is about this loud when nothing is going on) so I might lower that a bit. Speaking of, music is the only thing that allows me to forget I do have tinnitus. Glad to be here listening to you :)

Though the piece is 4 minutes long, I felt like I wanted more out of it, more development, more directions. I think you might have been able to pull of a key change for a final chorus, but otherwise, flawless work. I hate to be forced to choose between such wildly different, beautiful pieces!

papkee responds:

The fizz you hear was my attempt to bring back in the noisy radio traffic from the intro & midsection, but it got kinda drowned out in the mix and ended up sounding like, well, just noise. Whoops.

Thanks for the kind words otherwise! More electronic stuff like this isn't exactly my specialty so it's always fun to branch out even if it doesn't turn out amazing.

I think this might be the best submission we've had in terms of vibe / energy, I wasn't expecting this at the start, but man, you really delivered :D

You surprise me yet again, that one goes in my playlist ^^
