moonlighting

Hey folks, Trois writing. This is a NGADM 2023 Round of 16 entry.

CW for allusions to suicide (hence the T rating).

During the Group Stage I nearly lost my life — I was a hair's breadth away from taking my life due to being gaslit by someone in a position of authority. The gaslighting is nothing new, and the feeling of complete and total powerlessness is also a repeat instance. And that feeling of weathering from it being "nothing new" is what wears someone, anyone, down, sometimes to the point of death.

This song is directed against those who would abuse their power and authority. The connection with the song is that we've been moonlighting, in effect: abusive authorities often function like rackets, and we like to think we're good sometimes, but we moonlight as people who close our ears to people's experiences of being abused by systems we trust. Against systems like this we reassert the cry of I have a future to seize and survive!, however hard that cry is to muster.

I wrote the initial structure in the afternoon of 27 August BST — hours after we got the Group Stage results. That day, I spoke with Christoph about the events that led to the creation of this song, and just like anxiety, this song took a life of its own, giving us ideas on how to channel everything I went through.

When I finally did sing lead on this, I sang it with my suicidal mental exhaustion, and all the wavering of will my experience be believed? But the intentions and words still matter.

Our tonal and production influences for this one were a mix of RHCP, Steely Dan, and twenty-one pilots.

The entire round took place while I was moving house. Quite frankly, it's a massive privilege that I'm able to do what I've done for our collaborative effort, given the circumstances. With that:

Massive special thanks to Greg Slater for accommodating me on the day I recorded all vocals for this project.

Massive special thanks to the folks at Soundskills, especially Jason Beardsworth and Jamie O'Connor, for not only providing the space and manning the desk while I was recording drums, but making this part of the track happen to begin with, by accommodating me over the weekend.

Massive special thanks to my beloved Seán for fighting my corner, to various friends for checking in on me and keeping me going (you all know who you are), and to the two people whose names I don't remember who saved my life that day.

process in order

draft piano + vox structure > improved piano part > bass guitar > backing vocals > lead vocals > ack, my vocal cords > preliminary mix > frantically opening up Soundskills over the weekend to record drums because there'd be no time otherwise > oh no it's Big Run season brb Splatoon time > house moving related things > guitars > additional backing vocals > mix and master

LYRICS

I won't go down on my knees

I won't go down on my knees and cry

I want these false memories

I want these false memories to die

I have a future to seize

I have a future to seize and survive

I won't look back on your deeds

I won't look back on your deeds with pride

'Cause we've been moonlightin', baby,

we've been pretending all our lives,

yes, we've been moonlightin', baby,

o'er how much you're needed more than I.

I'm just too tired of these

I'm just too tired of these pretty lies

I've lost entire parts of me

I've lost entire parts of me to the skies

I don't need no one to please

I don't need no one to please all my life

I won't go down on my knees

I won't go down on my knees and cry

'Cause we've been moonlightin', baby,

we've been telling the longest ever lie;

yes, we've been moonlightin', baby,

I'm just the chaff that goes into your fire.

('Cause we've been moonlightin', baby, aaaaaa!

Yes, we've been moonlightin', baby, aaaaaa!)

Left to lick my sores alone at night,

left with a shell of my own mind,

left to nearly die upon the road am I!

I have a future to seize

I have a future to seize and survive!

('Cause we've been moonlightin', baby, baby, aaaaaa!

Yes, we've been moonlightin', baby, baby, aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!)

Job was blessed in the end specifically because of their adherence to their faith in the face of adversity. If you're a fan of the Bible I'd suggest James 1:2-3.

You have a gorgeous voice, and whoever did the piano/guitar/mixing/everything-the-hell-else KILLED it on this track. The crescendo was so subtle I hardly felt it before I realized that we were at FF.

The lyrics... oh, the lyrics. Any combination of words I could dream up- all of them- would be reductionist by comparison. I mean that. This song spoke to me in a way that most songs do not. Bra-fucking-vo. I mean that.

I look up to you. This. Too. Shall. Pass.

First of all, I’m so sorry to hear all that you’ve been through in the last couple of weeks, Trois. Can’t even begin to express how glad I am that those two people were there that day. You have some incredible grit to be able to channel all these experiences into such a beautiful work of art. Wow.

I like the relaxed mood at the beginning, the smooth lead guitar, and the heartfelt vocals. The way the “more than I” line fades out at 1:34 strikes me as a bit awkward, and there are other times where your voice sounds a bit strained towards the ends of phrases. I understand that’s part of the emotional quality you intended to put behind the song, but for me it doesn’t quite land.

I love the vocal layering and added instrumental tracks during the refrain, though. The guitar solo at 2:58 is really nice, although the vocals could’ve used a bit of a boost in the mix there. I like the soulful bridge at 3:22 too, though I felt the vocals could’ve blended better between each of your parts. The dramatic breakdown at 3:55 was absolutely chill-inducing, and that section in turn leads well into the outro with the heavy guitars at 4:10. From 4:34 on is another example of the vocals getting a bit overwhelmed in the mix, but was also a really resolute and fitting way of concluding the piece.

Overall, downright inspiring work here, you two. I also want to say that it’s rather refreshing to hear a song that has such a consistent rhyme scheme throughout, although that’s a pretty small detail in the grand scheme of things. Rock on, Troisnyx and DisOmikron! ^_^

Troisnyx responds:

Thank you for the review.

Unfortunately there's been enough going on on Newgrounds and elsewhere to show that that grit doesn't matter, my intentions and emotions and musicality don't matter, and this song was needlessly prescient with a certain very popular Newgrounder's gaslighting of his victim and the entire Newgrounds community.

So yeah, frankly, I'm done. I stayed on because of my modship, because people needed to process recent happenings, but I feel like I could disappear tomorrow and the sordid things behind this song would go on with absolute impunity because nobody gives a shit.

Just putting this out there for any to see, but personally, I would be utterly crushed to have lost you, Trois. However selfish it may be for me to say that, it's there, and there are many of us here on NG who feel the same. You are wildly talented and always a pleasure to hear, and I wholly approve of throwing these feelings into song. It feels like the only way to get it out and have it stick.

Beautiful oldschool rock sound to this track. Reminds me of favorites of mine from the 80s in both arrangement and tone. Gorgeous result and very impactful. I would still love to hear a bit more of the backing vocals spread out on big sections (beautiful choruses there) but am loving the raw emotion of the lead. By all means, keep doing what you're doing. You're nailing it down!

Troisnyx responds:

I want to thank you wholeheartedly for the review. I deeply empathise with the words, with the intent, with everything.

I also want you to know that given what this song is, what we toiled through, and what has become of it, it rings hollow in my heart. "Keep doing what you're doing," but no, this round has shown me that this song, and the intentions behind it, and everything else around it, don't matter. I feel I'm getting mixed messages because clearly the results show that I shouldn't keep doing what we're doing. This is where I'm at.

God damn!!! this is so good! wish you luck in this round! :D

Troisnyx responds:

Likewise, all the best to you too 🙏🏽

I love how you were self aware to tag this as angsty

Troisnyx responds:

Yeah so? We write songs to process things we go through, not really for the sake of making everyone fall in love with us.
