Hey all! Here's my submission to the first round of this year's NGADM (Newgrounds Audio Deathmatch)!

I honestly don't know how I pulled this off in one week. Guess I felt a rush of motivation and took advantage of it.

Made great use of a wide variety of Kontakt instruments from ProjectSAM's "Swing!" and "Swing! More", Noire (piano solo) and Cinematic Studio Brass (for that one solitary but powerful Horn at the first part) to Embertone Sensual Saxophone (the greatest sax-ual experience of your life). In addition to this, a couple SWAM solo instruments such as Alto Flute and Clarinet to complement the symphony with a couple melodies here and there.

I'm not really sure where I'm standing regarding mixing/mastering big ambitious projects like these, to be honest. I know I don't really feel like I'm gonna be "blasting anyone's eardrums off" anymore like I used to in the past, but at least I hope I did a decent work.

My creative process was basically a chain reaction of "ooooh this one chord sounds funky" to "i am become Albe, destroyer of Jazz"

Ok putting jokes aside and being honest here, I've been in an really bad and depresed mood for the past months and wanted to create something so absurdly uplifting to fight all the negativity that has been swarming my head...... i hope it works.

Anyways, hope you guys enjoy and have a great month of August!!

so good

Albe, you know that song titles don’t affect my judging rubric, but IF THEY DID…you’d be in good shape. Luckily, you’re STILL in good shape because this piece is awesome. I love the Latin-inspired rhythmic content and sound design. The mix sounds a bit overly-contained here, though - the sax at :42 sounds both quiet and also like it’s missing some mid-range tones. The thick texture and syncopations by the 1-minute mark are absolutely gorgeous, btw - just in time for you to quite smoothly transition into the flute solo at 1:20. The furtive piano solo at 1:42 is another highlight, with the spidery percussion backing it up really well. There’s a great subtle swell of energy into 2:18, and while the piece doesn’t quite get back to the same euphoric quality it had earlier, by 2:35 I feel like I’ve walked into a traveling circus mid-act. Really evocative work here, dude! Ease up on the high-pass filtering, and this piece would be borderline unstoppable. ^_^

Some of the best music is made in fighting that damnable depression. I'm with you <3

I have to say, swinging piece. My few complaints are reserved for articulations of repeated staccatos, a bit of excess reverb on big sections, the double bass could use just a bit more string noise imo as it doesn't sound as bright as the rest of the ensemble, and some instruments sound a bit more centered than I feel would convey a big band setting. Aside from hihats, the rest of the ensemble sounds a little dark, and I think the hihats could conversely come down a bit in the mix as a result.

Writing wise however, you utterly destroyed that drum solo. Holy shit was I not expecting that. Beautiful. And your writing otherwise is standout as always. I envy you in the most positive sense of that word. Great work. This one was a treat!

Very well made! Best of luck in the competition! :)

AlbeGian responds:

Thanks a lot Benji!! Good luck to you too
