my fourth official submission to NGIAC. This one is supposed to fall under the category of "dungeon synth". I was sick for the first half of this month, so this track was hastily made within about an hour. Still, I think this one came out very well. It was heavily inspired by music from the classic diablo games (specifically, this one), since Diablo 4 was announced recently.

This has a nice retro "dungeon" vibe to it, the chosen sounds and arrangement fit the mood really well. I would have liked to hear some melody in addition to the arpeggiated chords, and I think that the drums in the second half have too much variation, which felt a bit out of place to me. Just repeating the pattern from 1:04 to 1:10 (maybe with some very minor modifications) would work better in my opinion.

Very nice track, is that a dulcimer?
Reminds me of Arcana.
I like that you tried to recreate the "simpler" sound of that era, minimal effects, melodies coming in and out quite harshly, because of midi limitations of the time.

SirSandman0 responds:

the instrument at the beginning is just a midi harp, but it does kind of sound like a dulcimer. Thanks for the feedback!

This sounds pretty authentic to me. The genre's accessibility allows for a wide variety of interpretations and stylistic approaches. For some, like in your entry, the 90's "MIDI-ness", the almost bare bone melodic and structural simplicity, and the DnD medieval fantasy vibe just adds to the charm. I, for one, love it.

SirSandman0 responds:

thanks!
