I think at this point I've started to really warm up to the idea of telling stories or connecting songs to characters or personalities. It gives them a lot more personality and helps in the senses of emotion and composition. That said, the story here is a mixture of a character slowly succumbing to the numbness of the retro console he resides in, the console that paralyzes every fiber in his body, despite so desperately trying to fight back against it, despite trying to breathe above the surface of the struggle. I won't give too much more in the terms of the story, but hopefully the motifs and choices made tell that story in unique ways.
I think this is something I want to experiment with further. The ability to not be bound by a specific time signature as well as not be bound by a specific BPM opens up a lot of possibilities to make the music fit the mood I want to go for. It's something I wanna keep figuring out and playing around with, especially as more chord choices are familiar to me. I also might try mixing a few genres tastefully, again with the purpose of storytelling more than anything.
Gathering advice from another project I'm on, this is also where I tried a mastering technique that cuts down on much lower frequencies but also allows the kick to be punchier. I might experiment further on my mastering, as I realize that's always been a weakness of mine, but I'm interested to know if what I did was worse or better than what I had before on other songs.
