I'm really sorry for your loss. I can't imagine the pain you and your family are going through right now.

My wife and I had to deal with 3 miscarriages, but all of them happened within the first few weeks of pregnancy. So while it's still a huge pain we went through I think it's nothing compared to having a stillborn baby and a baby funeral to deal with.

About the large meal after a funeral, we do that too in Germany. It's called Leichenschmaus (literally "corpse feast").

Very heavy stuff that most people don't like to talk about, never mind give their personal account of. It takes some serious courage to do this, and you've made us all the better for it, thank you.

I'll share my own little story from last month.

My brother's best friend passed away, and his dad and another friend found him in his apartment in the bathroom already passed. Lots of speculation was going around as to how/why he passed including suicide being at the forefront of everyone's mind as he was just wrapping up his divorce. It was especially hard on my brother, because he had all the what ifs going through his mind. Friends are suppose to be there for each other and the thought that he might have missed a cry for help, made him feel responsible for his friend dying.

Fortunately, suicide was ruled out. The most probable theory is a bad batch of cocaine, or what he thought was cocaine. It doesn't make his passing easier, but suicide would have made it infinitely worse.

They had the funeral a while back, and the parents wrote a letter to their only son, and they didn't pull any punches. The most heartbreaking line was "How do we go on without you?". He wanted kids, was great with his younger cousins, would have been a great dad, but hadn't had any yet. They're at the point in their lives where they should be playing with grand-kids, but it's all been stripped from them.

As far as I know, the dad came out of retirement and went back to work a week or two after the funeral. The big question in my mind was 'Why?' other than it's probably therapeutic for him.
