The Unicorn Killer

Share

The twisted remnants of a wyrm once meant for greatness. Feasting on the flesh of a unicorn has cursed this creature, warping its mind and body as it seeks to build its hoard of unicorn blood. Long forgotten are its days of flight and fire, now it lives for the hunt. For the sparkling gleam of unicorn blood to flow over its fangs. Had it been discovered sooner, there may have been hope for recovery. There is no recovering from a unicorn's curse once it takes hold, and every unicorn slain only adds to the curse's strength.

Dragons are intelligent creatures, full of power and wisdom. This dragon will never think again. It will never look beyond the thing that it covets most: the unicorn, every aspect of it. It fire is quelled to save the shimmering pelt. It's claws long and curled, so as to avoid harming the unicorn on capture. It must be perfect, absolutely perfect, when the wyrm eats it alive.

The signs should be clear to the bystander. This is no beast to mess with. It's body has begun to reflect the object of its desires, making it clear this beast has slain many unicorns before this one. Long, golden strands of hair hand between the scales on its neck. A new horn has begun to grow in the center of its head, branching off like the antlers of the deer it used to eat. The limbs and tail have formed white tufts of their own.

-----

All dragons reflect their hoards in their body. The most well known example of this is the gold hoarding dragon, whose scales become round and golden themselves as the hoard grows larger. A dragon which hoards non-magical items will see less extreme affects on their physiology, and changes are often limited to aesthetic differences. Young dragons frequently lack any substantial hoard, having not yet settled on their object of choice. The rapid changing between what objects they hoard means that no one desire has time to take hold over them. It is common for a dragon to develop features related to its food or environment at this time, and those are the only steady things in their lives. A dragon that displays the features of other magical creatures is one to be avoided. These dragons are, without a doubt, killers. They hoard the blood of one species in their own veins. In this case, the combination of blood hoarding and a focus on unicorns has created a monstrosity. A dragon that has wisely chosen its magical prey will retain every aspect of its mind, making for a fearsome enemy.
