Photograph of count Vernant, dated 1875.
Count Vernant, also known as the Crimson Opossum, was a leader of an ancient cult during the late 19th century. His nickname, "Crimson Opossum" originated from his public appearances, in which he sported crimson red garments. People speculate that this choice of attire would be to hide blood stains from his clothes.
Count Vernant was part of a long lineage of cult leaders, but contrary to many of his predecessors, he seemed more socially isolated. He would, however, gladly invite followers to feasts and group prayers in his mansion.
