This is my entry for the Isolation Competition. It took me a while to figure out how I could best portray the theme using light, but in the end I decided upon drawing an apocalyptic scene or a war zone with a lone soldier standing amongst the destruction, perhaps the only survivor of the city or the entire planet. I decided to use an urban city environment to help portray isolation due to the vastness of cities, and to help further portray a large empty environment I used perspective to show a long road residing into the distance with not a car or person to be seen. I drew the figure of the armoured soldier to be small in comparison to the rest of the scene depict the emptiness around him, showing just how isolated he is in this large space. To further make this scene more eerie I decided to bath the city in the minimal light of an eclipse, adding rim lighting to objects in the piece to highlight them and make them stand out. To draw attention to the lone figure, I added what could be the last fire still burning after the destruction of the city bathing him in a warm glow, contrasting against the cold blues and greys of the dark city, offering him some small protection from the vast darkness threatening to consume him.
