Art School Stuff - Drawing II - Project 3: The Figure

Share

Here it is! My final project for Drawing 101, and by extension the final piece of art from my first year at art school. The weird draw a self-portrait and some random shit on top of a famous art piece assignment!

So basically the premise was this: we had to pick a piece of art from a "master artist" (Goya, Leo Da Vinci, Jacob Lawrence, etc.), recreate it, put a black and white self-portrait of our face and one of our hands on it in place of the face and a hand in the original work, and then add in three objects, one shiny, one rough/furry, and one transparent, while using a principle known as "trompe-l'œil" which basically means giving the objects cast shadows to make them look like they are on top of the image rather than "inside of it," if that makes any sense.

So I know jack shit about art history and couldn't think of a master artist I actually liked, so I decided I wanted to do something related to my major (game design) and asked if I could use the box art for DOOM as my masterwork, as it's about as close as I could get to an iconic piece of visual art from video games, and my professor let me, albeit somewhat reluctantly. As for the three objects, I chose the carabiner I use to clip my water bottle to my backpack (which is apparently a golden orange as opposed to the green I thought it was), a pill bottle I tore the labels off of, and a plushie of online artist Akai Riot's water elemental OC Kelda! You should go check him out on Twitter (@.AkaiRiot minus the period), he makes some good stuff. As for the face and hand, I just took a lot of pictures of myself in the mirror lol

This piece was simultaneously kind of fun, but also kind of annoying. After getting used to the lack of control from ink wash and watercolor, it was weird getting back into a medium like a pastel where I actually have to do everything myself instead of letting the water run its course and saying "Eh, it's impressionism!" It was also INSANELY annoying having to constantly redo my values because the pastel would smudge as I work. But in the end, I think the resulting product is pretty nice.

Anyways, I have a FUCKTON of process work, so I'll only be including like half of it. iu_655339_9137726.webp

Mega-DOOM fan + mod maker gives 5 stars (shock, gasp! ;)). This post was so much fun to read, and the result is pretty awesome too. I'd watch you twitching around as doom-guy on the HUD, haha =). If I was aware of this earlier I would've sought your input. Also, it's encouraging me to think about trying pastels, something that never would've occurred as I'm one of those dirty art outsiders ;). Hope to see where you go!
