Shapin' Da Future in 2024

Share

Jet Set Radio Future's set in 2024, so why not? (and why isn't our future that technologically or architecturally advanced like that video game?)

The theme for this drawing was "A sense of things to come", hence why I went for something simpler compared to last year's drawing. That theme loosely made it to the final product, in the form of sunlight rays which was added in last minute.

Yes, this was sort of a pose redraw but I didn't have any other JSRF-related prompts to base it from nor I didn't want to spend too much time on a drawing, and that pose is iconic. Also, I wanted to add more of a "bend" to the pose to fit with my style to not make it look too stiff. I wasn't too bothered by their designs not being seen due to being behind SodaDog, but the original art was sorta like that.

I ended up having to design two and a half additional outfits for my three OCs; one of them which was already done for SodaDog except "futurised" mostly with an antennae aesthetic. Tecnik's was easy because I'm going to redesign him and reuse elements from his old look into his JSRF outfit. Leroy's...was sorta difficult because I wanted to take the lightning bolt aesthetic into another direction and "retrofuturistic glam punk" seemed like a plausible option. I also loosely based off the outfit off an old drawing I did of him nearly 20 years ago I did on Paint.

I revisited the "grunge lines" since that style was well-recieved by some people, but I made the lines thinner so the designs can be seen easier. I applied the same logic to the background, taking notes from the JSR keyart and complete with the futuristic, washed-out and minimal colour palettes picked from the screenshots. I also tested out a new background style based on concept art of a video game, and I wanted to apply those design rules. The shadows and outlines were added in after realising the characters in front of the background clashed waaaaay too much. Sure it sorta lost some detail but I didn't want to spend too much time on that.
