An Evening Swim With Caducea (Pin Up)(2023)

Share

It's so gratifying to work on another overly indulgent Caducea pin up. This is the final line art I reached after several edits and redos.

I really wanted to do a bold, flamboyant pose that would give Caducea barely any modesty. I spent so much time trying to reconcile the slightly lower camera angle with variations of angles and appropriate shapes. Caducea is a woman who is obsessed with love - and is all the more desperate to be affirmed by her partner, the Necroli Doctor Nefi. I liked to imagine (as with all my Caducea pin ups) that she's putting herself out there for his benefit. This one is especially out there - hence the waver in her confidence.

So normally I hate backgrounds, and this affirmed a lot of my biases against the practice. STILL, it does help ground the image in a reality, that makes it all the more immersive, believable, and therefore, indulgent. I had fun trying to make my own evening/sunset sky, and I tried to make the water be believable. The FUCKING weeping willow tree is now going on the list of things I absolutely hate, I spent over an hour just making the damn branches look passable. I like having this invisible Caducea as a way to dig into the colors I used.

I get vaporwave vibes from this :y

And here's the finished product. I have been still employing my trusty one layer shading technique, and in this one I'm willing to say that I learned more from it than I neccesarily LOVED it. I added pure white highlights for wet effects, and did gentle hatching, as I'm certain that I'm OK at making objects look 3D in the digital medium. She ended up super pink, but I think there's definitely room for improvement. This still hit the spot to make, and I hope you'll love it maybe as much as I do. As far as I know, I'm the only lunatic making this very specific type of image on the web. PLEASE prove me wrong.

Loved this project, but I'll admit the more I do of these, the more I realize just how LONG it takes to make anything worth a damn creatively. Loved the time I spent on this, none the less.

Give me some feedback! Technique critiques, questions on the process or the character are more than welcome. :3
