Depicted here is an araxi - a race of cybernetic humanoids from my main settings (Overstay and Astral). Their history is long and is rooted in necromancy practices of their T'larr masters (one of my species) who used unclaimed or purchased corpses to create thralls for unskilled labor or to frighten their foes on the battlefield by raising their dead. It used to happen occasionally and there was no mass production for a particular purpose. It had changed by the end of the 19th century when a scientist and an engineer Mraq Allary with his wife Noxo Norn (my OCs) weaponized said 'zombies' and dubbed them 'araxi'. They made cybernetic creatures with armor and (usually) claws and weapons. The araxi could be controlled by a relay they were attuned to (general control, not precise commands. like "attack" or "calm down" and directions like left and right). The control mechanism had been developed by experimenting on rats' brains. 

Those things were scary even by the T'larr standards but the population was ready to accept anything that would give them an edge in endless wars against humans and, consequently, dragons (which created a surplus of corpses too). But nowadays people of any species can choose to become an araxi by choice, after death or prior to it. The araxi split off as an independent race, and they're potentially immortal now, with their minds loaded into the web and interconnected. They tend to mind their own business but they're still part of the Pact of the galactic nations. 

The one in the pic shed their mortal skin willingly, of course. The stone in their chest is jade and it's a testament to ancient thralls who needed jade 'hearts' to keep them functioning.
