Ex-Girlfriend of Vin who breaks up with him just prior to the beginning of the series.
Viola is the only person at the Moonview Institute that Joel knows personally before he goes there. They work together at a bookstore/ice cream shop where Joel works at the Ice Cream part and Viola works at the bookstore part. Joel admires her from afar but lacks confidence to express interest because he sees her as out of his league. She knows Joel is interested in her but mostly just teases him about it.
In the Fast Realm, Joel is a much more impressive person, so Viola is actually the one who attempts to attract him, but Joel keep telling her he wants her in the real world, much to her frustration. The problem is that neither of them remember what happens in the fast realm very well. (Joel does, but can't seem to muster up the same confidence and swagger to get Viola to notice him in the Slow Realm.)
When Joel learns that Viola is going to the Moonview Institute, and that he won't be seeing her at the bookstore anymore, he is motivated to go there as well, in order to finally become the kind of person that would impress her like he does in the Fast Realm. Viola is fickle and testy, but admires creativity and a sense of humor, two things that Joel does manage to pull off from time to time.
Viola is easily influenced by social pressures and goes through many different phases depending on the where the wind is blowing. Joel starts out with a desperate need for approval from her, that he has to learn to let go of. Through her he learns that his ability to love and be authentic comes from within himself, and should not dependent on external factors.
After the breakup, she and Vin treat each other with contempt. She is flirtatious with Ray but this is something that Ray ignores out of refusal to get involved with the ex of his friend.
