I personally like number one.
MADE ENTIRELY IN PAINT.NET WITH A MOUSE
Basically it has more than 65 layers, I did it all in a single .pdn file.
And.. I didn't even rename most of them.
One factor is the ambient lighting, controls the colors of the shading (bright purple and dark violet on 2).
Another is the post effects. Gives the picture it's own distinct feature (such as the paper texture on 8 and the glow on 9).
----------------
Here, I conducted a little experiment. I asked myself:
"How many ways can this have its own distinct vibe over the other"
So I decided to make at least nine of these to see if I could actually do it.
Each one has their own mood and ambience.
They individually set a tone.
That is why colors, contrast, lighting is very important for telling stories in one picture.
Each artstyle in detail:
1. Black and white with high contrast and vignette. Sets an eerie vibe.
2. High saturated purple and violet. Set a comic-book-like effect with a touch of video gaming mood.
3. Brown and green and a limited palette which gives a nostalgic or an old feeling.
4. Very detailed bump mapping with the background having a simple version. Adds a lot of depth and detail to the world a very eye-catching.
This one was inspired by the distinct Kingdom Rush art style.
5. Just the base colors. The darker the shade, the more saturated. Good for rich at colorful lighting.
6. Streetlight over to the side. With the unlit area having a blue rim light, very eye-catching presentation of the night's ambience
7. Grey with purple rim light and outline. Great for a dystopian setting.
8. My beloved paper cut-out artstyle that I use for most of my Don't Starve Fan Art.
9. A bright and sunny lighting gives a very bright and hot aura.
What do you think is the best one? and Why? :)
From least favorite to most favorite I'd sort it by:
8 , 9 , 6 , 2 , 7 , 3 , 4 , 1 , 5
I personally like number one.
