Meet: Skulz the Barbarian and Crawbone the Zombie Pup!

Share

Hey everyone, say hello to Skulz (The Barbarian) and her trusty and loyal pet Crawbone (The Zombie Pup)!

Skulz is your typical girl she likes bows, dress (with shiny bits on them), and bashing her enemies head in with her favorite club. You know, all those things that just endear a young woman into your heart (forcefully). Skulz grew up on the frontier of the Dragon's Throat Passage Way, in the World End's mountain range living off the land and learning to hunt with her father and mother. Their village was constantly under threat from orcs or other creatures that lived just beyond the more "civilized" sections of the mountain range. Growing up in this sort of environment taught her quickly that she would have to defend herself, and those around her.

Despite a rather harsh and troubling upbringing Skulz's exterior attitude towards life is upbeat and downright infectiously cheerful! She is always willing to lead a hand in fixing wrongs that need fixing, even if she was the one that created the wrong in the first place (accidentally of course). Personality wise she is bubbly and lovable, though internally she is fierce and loyal to those that have earned her trust and vengeful on thus that have earned her ire.

Everywhere she goes she is followed by her loyal and adoring, albeit slightly rotting, companion Crawbone. Who was not always the lovable zombie pup he is today, once upon a time he was just an adorable little dire wolf pup. But the story of Crawbone is best saved for another time! He is a faithful and frightful pet and friend to Skulz, when he is not asking orcs and goblins to rub his belly. Skulz wouldn't know what to do with herself if she lost him again and therefore is very protective of him, when he gets his his nose where it doesn't belong, which happens more often than it should.

Skulz and Crawbone are a perfect match for each other as one is soft on the outside and hard on the inside, while the other is hard on the outside (as bones tend to be), and soft on the inside (as they are actually exposed). Together the duo travel across the land fixing wrongs and have earned themselves somewhat of a reputation for being folkheroes (most of the time >.>;).

Artist note:
I had a really fun time working on this piece and the character concept of the two! I really loved looking at all the artwork for the challenge of the month and even though this is only my second I feel like I greatly improved over my last entry. If you like or didn't it please comment or rate it as I am trying to improve and looking for criticism of where I need to work on. Just remember that I do all of the work with a trackpad on a laptop.

Also if people like these enough I may record my process while I make it and upload it as speed art!

Wait... You do ALL the work on a trackpad?!!

If that's the case it's very impressing!
I would recommend doing a paper sketch first. Jazza has a great tutorial on how to digitalize here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0n2FNK8sDI&index=2&list=PLNaAcA0yN3KZ_zsdf68T0gBMJp_KYDPli

I know not everyone has access to a scanner, but the change would be great to decrease the strain in your hand.

Also I would change the pose a little to give emphasis to the weight of the club since right now it doesn't look heavy for how big it is. And move her left hand a little so it doesn't blend with the hair (or change the color of th gloves)

Rayiless responds:

Thanks, yeah I did all the work on a trackpad, but getting a mouse soon, though it may be a shitty basic digital one.

As for hand drawing it in first I did, but the line work on that one was a bit worse and the proportions were even further off so I went in with the pen tool and traced over everything to make it look better. I think it looks much better than the orginial hand sketch, which if you want to see is in the WiP thread on page 4 near the middle: http://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic/1417254/4

I did watch the that and it was really good, just like all of his I think I just need more practice and to learn to be more efficient and not go into too many shading details at times.

Okay, thanks the pose did look off to me, but I couldn't figure out what it was at times, and also working with what I have doing major changes by the time I notice them are hard and I often don't have time to fix them.

I also think Crawbone turned out better overall, but certain parts of Skulz turned out perfect to me, like the gem in her hair, skull belt, and tuffs near the armor.

Thanks again for the comments! I also checked out your piece looks good.
