May was born in Nightrise, Pennsylvania to a first generation Japanese immigrant and a late Jewish woman who's lived her whole life in Nightrise much like her past her generations before. May is seen as a child prodigy, despite her detest of the label. She is the smartest kid in school with little effort on her part. But with this, she is also misanthropic to most people around her, yielding little to no trust to anyone but a select few.

Growing up, she learned how to speak Japanese and write Hiragana along with Kanji from her strict father, along with Hebrew and English from her more caring Mother Jezebel.

Ever since Jezebel died, Shizuka has been taking numerous jobs to take up every single second and May feels a great amount of resentment towards her father for it. She even refers to the seconds he's there as a "ghost haunting for a moment".

Her brother is the only family she talks to more often, and their only way of communicating is picking a language to shout at each other in. But to her. Scarlett is just as much family if not more than William.

May had known Scarlett for a while, before she went by the name of Scarlett and even before she chose to live as a girl. While May doesn't fully understand, she sees how much happier Scarlett is and enjoys it. The two are inseparable, following a schedule together outside of school where they hang out frequently.

When she noticed Alice hanging around Scarlett more often, she become concerned for Scarlett's safety, seeing Alice as a threat for dating her brother and Scarlett's. May manages to keep appearances at the lunch table as well as at group night and get togethers.
