I made this some weeks ago for an rp forum that I no longer go to. However, people here might me more familiar with the iteration that is Samantha's brother (although that iteration is notably less grumpy than the one in the pic).
While the method of how they were made differs, Sanoske was always part Belphemon.
You have to work more in your light direction and try to not use white and black for lights and shadows.Something that i do for shadding is using
warm colors for lighing (red, orange and yellow) and cold colors for shadows (blue and purple).
It's a supposition looking at the dark void of the purple wings.

Also I mainly use grey for lights and shadows, and fiddle with layer settings, but I get what you're saying. I just never really know what colors would really look good and end up just taking the easy route.
