Maysozoic Day 6: Deinocheirus

Share

Day 6 of Maysozoic brings one of my all time favourite dinosaurs, Deinocheirus. I see many people describe these dinosaurs as strange and unnerving, but personally, I think these creatures are adorable, thanks in part to Prehistoric Planet kickstarting my love of this dinosaur with the scene of it scratching its back on a dead tree to the tune of goofy, bouncy music. Due to their nature of living in swampy mudflats, I based this piece on the Shoebill Stork, a similarly weird looking bird that inhabits similar environments. As for the saddle, I went for a sort of canopy with mesh netting on it, as there would likely be a lot of pests in the swampy environment, which is partially inspired by Prehistoric Planet as well. As I was focused on the look of it's head and neck region, I forgot to draw a bridle, but I don't think it's a huge deal.

These lumbering creatures inhabit swamps and mudflats of the more inland regions of the world. Their large stature and strange appearance make them quite intimidating, but a few people find them rather endearing. The people of the swamp tend to use these creatures for their varied harvesting abilities, with their deceptively sharp beaks allowing them to catch fish from the murky waters, and their long arms and claws letting them dredge up plants from under the water that are used for many purposes by the swamp peoples. Their thick coat of downy feathers helps to ward of pests and insects from biting them, but they have still been known to melt into a good hard scratch after a hard days work. While they can be tamed, theses creatures must not be underestimated in the wild. Their sharp beaks and massive arms allow them to face down and chase off the apex predators of their environments on occasion, and they have been known to use these weapons against anything they perceive as a threat, so be cautious encountering one in the wild.
