Maysozoic Day 4: Cryodrakon

Share

Day 4 comes rather late, and day 5 will also be late unfortunately due some plans I had this weekend, but we shall press on none the less, with one of the giant Azhdarchid Pterosaurs, Cryodrakon, yet another of many creatures on this list that I had never heard of. While not as large as the big 3 Azhdarchids, Quetzalcoatlus, Hatzegopteryx and Arambourgiania, it's still nothing to sneeze at size wise. For this one I imagine this thing being a giant flying terror of the tundra, despite it's environment in real life being quite humid and warm. It's in a similar situation to Cryolophosaurus, where the word "cryo" just makes me think tundra. For the saddle I tried to make it so that it would function both while walking and flying, by adding a long back to the seat of the saddle for the rider to sit on while the creature takes a more upright stance on the ground. Unfortunately given the lateness of this piece, I didn't want to design a rider, so the human being is mostly to show how the saddle is used and the scale in relation to the Cryodrakon.

Once thought by mountaineers and people of the colder places of the world to be ice dragons, hence the name, we now know that the majestic, but terrifying, Cryodrakon are giant Pterosaurs. Their huge wings carry them long distances across the tundra and mountains that they inhabit, snatching up small creatures hiding in the snow, scavenging carcasses and rarely, attempting to hunt some of the larger animals in the environment if they become desperate. People living in colder climates often use these creatures as fast, long distance flying mounts, due to their speed and stamina, but they aren't strong enough to transport cargo via air. Some even use them for hunting, by shooting off their backs whilst out of reach of prey, letting the Cryodrakon carry their quarry home with them in it's talons.
