Maysozoic Day 3: Sauropelta

Share

Day 3 of Maysozoic, with the beautiful Nodosaurid Ankylosaur, Sauropelta, and the first dinosaur on the prompt list. I have always had a soft spot for Ankylosaurs given that Ankylosaurus itself was my original favourite dinosaur. It isn't anymore, my actual favourite will come up at the end of the month, but I still love them very dearly. Sauropelta especially is very eye catching given its very large shoulder and neck spikes, even compared to other Nodosaurs. I have attempted to draw a saddle here, and given that they've been very difficult for me in the past, I think I've done rather well, especially thanks to my father helping me with the actual structure and functionality of it. Either way, I hope you enjoy this piece, as I enjoyed making it.

Inhabiting coastal floodplains alongside many other peaceful herbivores, these hardy creatures earn their name thanks to their well armored backs. They can deter most predators without effort, such as smaller raptors like Deinonychus but if something larger comes looking for a fight they use their spiked shoulders and long tails to quickly chase off the assailant. Many people around coastal towns and settlements use them as mounts or beasts of burden due to their good stamina. Though their exceptionally long tails prevent them from puling carts or wagons, they can still carry loads using baskets and bags strapped to saddles on their backs, making them an indispensable part of these towns communities.
