Day 20 of Maysozoic brings my favourite Pterosaur of all time, the gigantic Hatzegopteryx, likely the largest animal ever to soar the skies. There is just something about the tall, thin nature of Azhdarchids that makes them as majestic as they are terrifying. This genus in particular is thought to have been particularly robust compared to other similarly sized Azhdarchids such as Arambourgiania and the ever famous Quetzalcoatlus, having a far thicker and heavier head and unusually dense bones. They were even the apex predators of their namesake environment, Hatzeg Island, an island about the size of my home, Ireland, which harbored an ecosystem populated by dwarf dinosaurs, even Titanosaurs there weren't much bigger than modern cattle, which sounds truly bizarre. This heavier build is part of why I like them so much, as I tend to gravitate toward large bulky animals rather than thin gracile ones. For colours I didn't really have much reference aside from knowing I wanted a striped beak, so I chose to use a mix of reds and greens, a colour scheme I've always been fond of.
These flying giants are relatives of the polar regions, Cryodrakon. Hatzegopteryx is one of the heaviest creatures to soar through the sky, and is seen patrolling the coasts of the region, looking for its next meal. They mostly eat smaller creatures, however their robust build and heavy beaked skull allow them to take down prey that most other pterosaurs would avoid, even ones of a similar size. They strike quite an intimidating figure, with their tall necks and long skulls giving them a very iconic look. Though ferocious, some of these creatures have been somewhat domesticated, forming bonds with riders and allowing them to mount their backs for travel. And travel they do, as the arial giant soars across the coasts, all over the archipelago that the sea fairing peoples call home.
