Maysozoic Day 16: Aegisuchus

Share

Still doing catch up. hopefully I'll be caught up soon.

Day 16 brings a very unusual Crocodilian with a very wide head, Aegisuchus, the Shield Croc. The name sounds far more imposing than the actual animal, which is actually rather small, even compared to modern Crocodilians, although I suppose the danger factor is still there. They are still very interesting though. Their heads are often restored with large gular pouches like modern crocs due to its lifestyle. It would've hunted fish and small reptiles in its environment. As for the colours, which unfortunately don't show up as well thanks to the lighting of my space at the time, after seeing the word Aegis, it immediately made me think of one of my favourite games that I've played throughout the last few years, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, so I tried to use the colours from both of the Aegis girls for this croc, although the red is more prominent as I personally prefer Pyra. I've decided to go with something a bit weirder for my Aegisuchus' description, but I think it's good for what it is, and makes sense given it's bright colours.

The Aegisuchus is a relatively small crocodilian that inhabits a rather unusual habitat compared to its relatives. While most crocodilians live in fresh water environments, this smaller crocodilian is a saltwater predator, who camouflages in coral reefs with its bright colours. It's long, flat head allows it to quickly turn it's head in the water to snatch up fish and small crustaceans in the reefs. Being a reptile, it does need to come on land and breath air to survive, and can often be seen basking on rocks at the waters edge. Sometimes they even catch small reptiles and mammals on land, so they really are quite versatile despite appearances. They aren't really more than pests to the coastal peoples, and to other predators, they often fall prey, such as a certain large dinosaur that inhabits these coasts.
