Maysozoic Day 14: Dilophosaurus

Share

Maysozoic trucks on with Day 14, the early Jurassic apex predator, Dilophosaurus. It's old news at this point that Dilophosaurus wasn't a venomous spitter, but the Jurassic Park version of this dino is still very cool. However, ever since seeing what Dilophosaurus looked like in life, I have been enamoured by this sleek, vibrant predator, and with how little we know about it's famous head ornamentation, it opens the door for so much interesting speculation. Were they brightly coloured, did they support an inflatable or otherwise fleshy structure, was it linked to its nose in some way. This kind of thing is why I love dinosaurs, they become so interesting because of how little we know. I have decided to be rather tame here, making them simple display structures. The colour scheme is a reference to a series that I hold near and dear to my heart, so I'm curious to see who will be able to pick it out.

Inhabiting the jungles of the land are these large, crested predators. They are feared by the people of the jungle, to the point where they have never attempted to tame one. They sneak around, hiding in the brush until they're within striking range, before lunging out of the brush to snap at them with their deceptively powerful jaws. They are quite thin looking, but they are by no means delicate, they are feared for a reason. There are some rumors that even say that the Dilophosaurus is venomous, though I haven't found any proof of that so far. Their large colouful crests, which are their namesake, are mainly used to identify each other, and grow throughout the animals life. They are well adapted to the environment of the forests and jungles of the region, but their are things that even they won't touch, so they aren't invincible. They tend to steer clear of the giant herbivores that feast on the tree tops.
