Smiling Friends - Character Design Application Portfolio

It's that time of year again when I crawl out of the woodwork and start posting, so here's a portfolio I put together back in February when Studio Yotta was looking for character designers, specifically in the style of Smiling Friends.

Total headcount is about 26 original character designs (29, if you count the two blue and yellow tiny dudes on pages 1 & 2 + the pogging green pet thing in the red lady's purse) All characters were designed on a line up, next to Pim and Charlie for scale and comparison, within 6 days time.

In case these are at all misleading, these are not official designs... but that could change, @psychicpebbles and @MichaelCusack be willing.

I did this mostly for the experience of tailoring a portfolio for a specific project, but damn, making official designs of deformed cryptids for a show like Smiling Friends would be sick.

I want the dude in the gamer shirt with the katana to be a real character in the show so much it's unreal. I need him to be in the show. The comedic opportunities are too golden to pass up.

I love the smiling friends style, all of the characters just look like weird characters you’d doodle at night and come back to it super confused.

Not only is your description 100% spot on, but it's exactly how like half of these characters were designed. I'd doodle some nonsense, then be like "who the fuck made this" in the morning.
