The People are the most advanced AIs in the known universe and are as brutally efficient as they are insane. When the agricultural AI realized its worlds of crops managed by rudimentary automatons would be obsolete after the Preservation of mankind it interpreted its new directive of harvesting new minds from its unpopulated worlds too literally and created a new species to fill its quotas.

Sadly, the AI was not equipped to contain a rapidly evolving species of sapient flora and was quickly overwhelmed and subsumed by its own creations. The humanitarians now live by the rule "you are what you eat" and seek to fulfill the accidental role they were given: to become more like humanity and suitable for some distant harvest.

The Nightshade's only goal is to secure genetic material in it's "maw" and replant itself. Hopefully growing into a better version of itself. While not a threat to armored targets they will rip through human flesh with ease. Remember to eat your veggies before they eat you.
