25 years of SpongeBob! Kinda wish I could have done a bigger piece but I’ve been working on a lot of other drawings so I had to make it easier for me to finish by today.
This silly little show holds a special place in my heart, it was probably the first Nickelodeon show I watched that wasn’t targeted to preschoolers. Phineas and Ferb, MLP: FIM and LPS 2012 all helped solidify my interest in animation and drawing, but I think SpongeBob was what truly got me into it. I would draw the characters from the show all the time at school and at home. I recorded hundreds of SpongeBob reruns and owned a good chunk of SpongeBob DVD’s. I played SpongeBob games on my mum’s phone. I looked up tutorials on how to draw SpongeBob online and would watch the behind the scenes material on Nautical Nonsense and Sponge Buddies a fair bit. Yeah, some may argue that the show hasn’t been good since 2004, but I personally think the newer seasons (even though I haven’t watched them in a good few months) are really good! I personally watch the first couple of seasons the most if I’m in the mood to watch SpongeBob but I sure as heck make sure to watch the newer episodes.
Kinda a sappy monologue but I feel like if I wasn’t into this show as a kid I probably wouldn’t be drawing as much. Congrats to all the cast and crew for working on this show and its extended universe, and here’s to 25 more years, that is if Nickelodeon doesn’t implode on itself.
