Fate/Grand Order: Katsushika Hokusai

Lineart coloring of Hokusai from Fate/Grand Order. Lineart provided by SilverChaim: www.deviantart.com/silverchaim

Anyway, I think this character is a reference to the ukiyo-e painter of the same name. Or more accurately, his daughter, Oi, who distributed her own paintings under her father's name. IIRC, he allowed his students to distribute their works under his old aliases, so this would've been a normal practice. Anyway, I'm not too familiar with the Fate franchise. But it seems to have a lot of cute characters, so I've been meaning to get into it. I actually really liked Hokusai's design. It definitely stretched the limits of my skills to color it, but I think I'd like to do more of her sometime in the distant future.

For this piece, I tried to incorporate some elements to give it a pseudo ukiyo-e style as a tribute to the genre, but looking at it now, I think that might've been a bit too ambitious for me. I also had a hard time drawing the cloud thingy at the bottom. I couldn't replicate the style of the paintings I was referencing (at least not with any degree of competency). But I tried to use a simpler style from a painting that I saw a number of years ago. I can't remember what it was called. It had a creature in full battle dress with a polearm, and it was riding a cloud. I want to say it was a blue ogre, but I'm not sure. I couldn't find it on Google, so I had to attempt to replicate the cloud from memory. I also had a bit of workflow problems, since I did this with Clip Studio. For one thing, I had to use SAI for some of the textures. I also had to do the hair, brush texture, etc... in SAI, because I still can't replicate my fiber brush in Clip Studio. I did, however, have a bit of an easier time with this piece, since I finally found the "pen pressure settings" option (haha, I'm a dumbass). It still feels a little slippery, but it's MUCH better than before.

I actually wanted to get this finished and submitted in October, but I've been absolutely swamped with work. I'm actually really grateful to be allowed to do these lineart colorings; since they don't take as long, they make it easier to post more. But I REALLY want to start putting more time into art, writing, videos, worldbuilding, and such, but it's really hard to get enough free time. Work and other IRL stuff keeps getting in the way, so my own work is dying on the vine while I work 70+ hour workweeks, as well as household tasks, and now the holiday season is here to make everything worse, and the Packers are terrible this year! AAAAAUUUUUGUUUUAAAAH!!!

There. I feel better now.
